Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates and his wife, Melinda, have donated $1 million to a Washington state campaign seeking to expand background checks on gun sales, bringing the total amount the campaign has brought in up to nearly $6 million.

The large donation comes on the heels of fellow Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen’s $500,000 donation earlier this month. Also last week, venture capitalist Nick Hanauer donated an additional $1 million, bring his total donation to the campaign to nearly $1.4 million.

I do not need vast sums of money, however, I do occasionally wish I was an eleventy billionaire, just so I could devote endless amounts of money to things that would piss off liberals. I wish I could buy a big chunk of Marthas Vineyard, and hire a fleet of busses to collect illegals and homeless from all over town with the express purpose of creating a shanty town right in the middle of the primest possible real estate

Here the flush go down the drain because I believe this news will encourage for more citizens to gear / arm up. The leftists never give up nor should any of us. I agree with the other comment; it’s sad they don’t put the money into other causes that would benefit society vs. trying to manipulate and take away someone’s God given rights. Gates has become too weird to look up to.

I don’t have a big problem with background checks within reason. There is something to be said for “gun control” if/when unstable individuals are involved. Not sure how my opinion comports with that of Mr. Gates, but I sure as h want the citizens of this country to be able to defend their lives and property from enemies both foreign and domestic and do so without infringement.

Very true comments and I so agree with them.
And there are some (not to mention any login names) here on Free Republic who think Linux is run by commies. Granted GNU's Richard Stahlman surely fits that description but there are plenty of right-thinking developers in the Linux world. For example there's Larry Wall, the creator of Perl (which is used by Free Republic) who seems to be a good sort.
