Republican strategist and former John McCain consultant Steve Schmidt has joined the team helping Texas Gov. Rick Perry with the strategy around his indictment, POLITICO has learned.
Schmidt is the latest addition to a team that Perry has been expanding with legal hands.
The Republican governor, a potential 2016 presidential candidate, has been indicted for allegedly abusing his power by vetoing funding to the office of a Democratic prosecutor who wouldn’t resign after a drunken driving arrest.
“We’re bringing in the best of the best to help us handle this … this is serious, we’ve got to handle it with the appropriate measures,” Perry spokesman Jeff Miller said.
Schmidt did not respond to an email seeking comment.
Earlier this week, POLITICO’s Mike Allen reported that Perry had hired former Clinton White House special counsel Mark Fabiani to a team that already included Republican lawyer Ben Ginsberg.

Great, now Perry will get indicted and Schmidt will spend a year on MSNBC telling everyone how it wasn’t his fault.

Steve Schmidt. Doesn’t Perry think he can lose on his own? He went and hired himself a proffesional loser.
I thought Perry was smarter than this? I should think that anyone paying attention would be smarter than this.

Wow. Every time I want to give Perry a chance, he does something with NO upside, and lots of downside. I can’t believe he couldn’t find more talented people than Schmidt. I am hoping he is just paying Schmidt to co-opt him and keep his mouth shut, like O.J. did with Dershowitz.
I agree literally word for word. Can’t wait till Greg’s our gov and we don’t have to deal with this drama.
