Tragedy in Ferguson: What the Justice Department can do next
Reuters' Great Debate ^ | August 25, 2014 | William Yeomans

The tragic killing of Michael Brown by Officer Darren Wilson has brought to the surface long-simmering tensions between the Ferguson Police Department and the Missouri community it serves. In the shooting’s immediate aftermath, the focus has been on whether Wilson will be prosecuted criminally and convicted for the shooting. In the longer term, however, the focus must ultimately turn to a broader agenda, including substantial reforms in the Ferguson Police Department if it is to regain the full trust and confidence of the community.

After Attorney General Eric Holder traveled to the St. Louis suburb on Wednesday, he vowed that the Justice Department would stay involved to help heal the relationship between the police department and the public. While many of the essential facts of the encounter between Brown and Wilson remain unknown, we do know that criminal convictions of police officers for shooting people are few and far between. The killing of Brown may turn out to be the rare incident that results in a criminal conviction by state or federal prosecutors, but statistics suggest that outcome is unlikely.

So what more can Holder and the Justice Department do? Fortunately, whatever the outcome of the criminal process, they still have important tools at their disposal.

One crucial order of business will be to identify any credible allegations that the Ferguson Police Department used excessive force or other unconstitutional practices in responding to the demonstrations. The department’s frightening display of heavy weaponry established that it overreacted to peaceful protests, as did its heavy-handed treatment of the press. It will be essential to launch investigations into the credible allegations and pursue criminal prosecutions if any are appropriate.

The collection of these incidents, as well as incidents in the relatively recent past, will serve a second purpose....

I'd recommend Substantial Reforms in the Ferguson Black Community.

I hope Holder does go after this cop who killed thug Brown. He will piss off every police force and union across the country. Bad move on his part.

Honest to God, some of these folks are insanely stuck on stupid.

Brown’s own actions caused his demise.

So the conclusion here is that the Police Department, not members of the community need to change their ways.

It’s like me failing to put more gas in my car, then blaming the gas station for not being located five miles down the road where I ran out of gas.

Exactly!

I’m not buying the idea the whole community is down on that police force either. It submits a fact for which there actually isn’t any support.

Around 2.5% of the protesters lived in Ferguson, calculated by actual arrests, admittedly not the best indicator, but at least an indicator.

It doesn’t matter how exonerated the officer or his PD will be it won’t be received well at all and it’ll be just another excuse for Sharpton and his ilk to agitate again and more rioting.

When I can’t even finish reading the first sentence without throwing up a little in my mouth, then I know I’m in for a real barf fest as I (attempt) to read the rest.

Yes, tragic that this big, powerful, young black mam...

1) Robbed a store and then strong armed the clerk that tried to stop him.
2) Blatantly walked down the middle of a street with his accomplice after the robbery.
3) Profaned a police officer who asked him to get out of the street.
4) Assaulted and then beat that police officer when he questioned Brown.
5) Refused a lawful order by the officer to stop.
6) Charged the police officer, with clear intent to do more harm.

This is what happened that led to Michael Brown’s death. At each stp he old have made decisions that old ave prevented it.

But he did not make those decisions.

No interest whatsoever in whether Officer Wilson was justifiably in fear for his life.

“tragic killing”.....that’s a matter of opinion, the deceased was a strong arm thug robber, who was shot dead in an attack on a police officer. A tragic killing may be attributed to the beheading of James Foley.

The treatment Officer Wilson is being subject to is a travesty. The real tragedy is what’s happening to American justice.

It’s obvious the Ferguson community needs to be reformed, but that can’t happen, so reform the Ferguson police by discharging all the white people. Let them go to nice white communities to work. Ferguson deserves nothing but black officers, and that will make everything better.

I am so tired of this. First they build a false narrative and sell it to the masses. Then they build discussion points off it and push for changes to things that do not need any changes, all to justify their original false narrative. is the public this dense to always fall for it? Wow.
