Black-white housing gap,who are they trying to kid.Look at the porch in the picture. It was new maybe 15 years ago.In all that time, the owners were too lazy to put a coat of paint on it.So it decayed and now needs torn out and replaced.

Same with the door. What's a gallon of paint? Twenty bucks? It's like the pity party never stops...

One of these days “white flight” will become “white fight”. It won’t be pretty...

"In about a month, they will realize in Ferguson that they have no businesses to strong-arm. Any merchant worth his/her salt will be moving away-——FAR away."

By the looks of the trend over the last 40+ years and now the looting, pillaging, and burning, I would have to agree with you, but it'll take a bit longer than a month.

Housing gap?

Why doesn’t the feral gub’mnt just order banks and mortgage companies to give a few trillion dollars in wealth redistribution disguised as housing loans to blacks who can’t or won’t make the monthly payments or pay the loans money back?

Oh, wait...

Hasn’t that already been tried?

Communities of color got the worst of everything. They were given the highest-risk, most expensive mortgages, they received the worst servicing from their mortgage lenders, and they have suffered the most damage from the nation’s long economic slump...

Why do you suppose that is? Sorry, but I'm really fed up with the "I'm-a-victim" excuse. The fact is, the people don't invest in themselves. They don't study, they don't finish high school, they don't read, they don't learn a trade. Until I start seeing some effort on their part to improve their own lot in life, I'm going to blame it on them. They get all kinds of breaks, from lower expectations in graduation requirements, to easier standards for college admission, to scholarships, plus they dip deeper into the public pool of funds on a relative basis. Nope...time for them to give up the victim excuse and bootstrap their life with their own effort. The free ride needs to end.

Well gosh, the answer is obvious. Toss whitey out of their homes and let the blacks move it.

That’s probably part of Valerie’s plan :(

The reason there is a black-white housing gap is because blacks think there is supposed to be a government program for everything, including home maintenance.

Normal people mow their lawns and clean their gutters and paint their siding and take out the trash.

Blacks wait for the government to do it.

We had a cold winter in Atlanta this past year, with huge numbers of houses having frozen and burst water pipes; I had one myself.

I saw, literally, dozens of news stories showing black people calling the fire department when they had a water pipe burst in their homes.

The government program to promote home ownership at the cost of the soundness of the financial system did less than nothing for many who go loans who never should have.

The majority of got substandard loans in the housing market bubble were not homeless before the substandard loans, but renters. The vast majority were paying their rent. If they had remained renters they would still be renters today, yes, but they would also NOT have debt exceeding their ability to pay it.

The article is very silly.
Loans are risky to the lender, not the borrower.
These risky loans were risky because the interest rates being charged were too low with too little equity provided by the borrower. Variable rate loans made in the 2000’s have not bitten anyone through rate escalations, because rates have stayed low. If anything its the fixed rate borrowers who are looking like chumps.
If the people who borrowed are at risk, its because they were persuaded to borrow at all, as under prudent criteria they should not have qualified as they were unlikely to be able to keep up the payments.

“The homeownership rate among white households declined during that time, too, but remained at 73.5 percent.”

This makes no sense. A rate cannot both decline and remain the same.

You know, if you just painted the front door and the railings a pretty or off-beat color that house would look cute. You can go to the Habitat for Humanity Home Store and buy left over paint from construction jobs for very cheap.
In one afternoon for less than $50 you could have that place at least looking nice and cheerful.

Now, there might be more serious work that needs to be done. But making the outside of your home at least presentable would go a long way to sprucing up the neighborhood.

How about a Sky Blue or a Lime Green paint for the door and railings? Would look great! Ok the roof might leak but still, you’re on your way to getting the neighborhood looking better.

I live in a minority community and I strongly suspect that my zip code put me on a “sucker list”. In 2007 and 2008 I was getting five offers a week for loans that made no sense at all.

The only ones I called back on were those who offered to refinance my World Savings mortgage. I did not in fact have a World Savings mortgage. However I did have a World Savings account, and called them to confirm that I was being scammed. I called the number and got some other entity that told me they’d been hired by World Savings to do the paperwork, which was an outright lie.

I would not be at all surprised if it were proven that ignorant immigrants and minorities were targeted. That does not make them blameless, but my impression is that is exactly what was happening.

Many of the families that were sold risky mortgages had good credit, decent incomes, and everything else necessary to qualify for traditional long-term, fixed-rate loans. Yet, they were not offered those kinds of loans, but instead “steered into exotic and costly mortgages they did not fully understand and could not afford,” the commission said.

Yep, whitey's fault. Specifically, Carter and Clinton.

Same with the door. A can of Rustoleum is $15. A new coat of paint starting ten years ago and then every five years and it doesn’t rust.

My steel entry doors are 15 years old. Fourth coat of paint, NO RUST! Same with my back porch. At least twenty years old. Only thing done to it is new steps. Painted every couple years. All good. or good enough!
