#3 Gary Lewis & the Playboys: Save Your Heart for Me He could barely play drums, and his voice was so weak he had to over-dub himself to be heard. But with a producer like Snuff Garrett, miracles can happen. These recording sessions provided studio musicians like Leon Russell with a chance to be heard for the first time by a wide audience.

Yeah, I was a youngster in those days. Everything was so new and innocent. When I heard Ray Charles sing "Let's Go Get Stoned", I thought he was asking people to participate in a civil rights march.

#2 The Rolling Stones: SatisfactionThese guys had been on the charts since the first wave of the British Invasion, but this was the first time they had a hit that went all the way to #1. It was the biggest selling single of the year and was heavily blues flavored. It also violated the three minute rule and came in at over four minutes.

When I first heard Dylan’s “Rainy Day Women”, I was so innocent I thought he was singing about alcohol, not weed.

#1 Sonny & Cher: I Got You BabeSalvatore Bono had been Phil Spectors whipping boy for years. Spector would rant and rave at Sonny, and even fire pistols into the ceiling of his studio to intimidate the musicians. But it was Sonny who held things together.
He and the Armenian-gypsy girl Cherylin Sarkesian became an item when Cher sang background vocals for Spector. They started as a duo act, Ceasar and Cleo, in 1963 for Frank Sinatras label, but in 1965 they left and signed with Ahmet Ertegun at Atlantic. This was the start of a lucrative career that lasted until Cher divorced Sonny a decade later.
Catch the harpsichord, glockenspiel, oboe and bassoon in the arrangement. While Sonny was a gifted producer and songwriter, there was never any doubt who had the vocal chops in the duo. Even now, decades later, she hasnt lost her touch.
Sonny & Cher: I Got You Babe
Thats it for tonight. In two weeks its 1966. Cue the Rockumentary theme!
