I am very happy with the streaming content.

Beats paying hundreds to Cox and Dish, crazy contracts, you cant even get out of after they expire.

I know what you mean....some of us have the energy of younger people and don’t want to sit down and do nothing...lol Even if we are able to do that.

Of course there are lots of opportunities for self employment, but in general... older workers are not wanted in today’s markets. There is so much competition for jobs that companies want to train someone, who will be there for the long haul.

I guess now it’s about finding a need and meeting it, that is the best way to earn money...off the grid... so to speak. That would depend on a man’s talents, say he is a good handyman, those are always needed. Older women, who are single/widowed/divorce are always looking for someone who can do fix things, or are flexible like an assistant to drive them places or pick up stuff....and many pay very well.

Myself I love Amazon. I do most of my online shopping there and my kindle fire is my constant companion.

I distrust the old guard like hachette telling me I need to pay higher prices because it is "good for the industry"

I buy books on Amazon all the time for well under 5 bucks. To me a couple "k" kilobits of info is well worth that. If they had a larger overhead of shipping and manufacturing costs etc.(imagine all the energy and dollars it costs to cut down a tree and then get it into a form to be made into a book) I can understand a price of 15 bucks. But you can't expect rational people to believe a trade paperback that sells at 19.95 costs the same to get to a customer as an eBook copy of the very same book and thus should sell for the same price.

The Old guard book publishers like Hachette are trying to protect their out-of-date business model much in the same way Big Music and Big Movie did when digital music and movie formats came out.

They will lose...

While giants like Amazon see the future so do I.

Currently I run XBMC on a device like FireTV.

XBMC is open source and free.

Amazon will shut that down eventually if they get the market, but you should be able to get content ala carte rather than pay for 200 channels of praline and d***

We cut the dish/cable cord about three years ago and have not looked back and I have yet to find a show or sporting event that we can not watch on the internet.

Cable/Dish is in a downward spiral.

People our age and older still cling to the old way of consuming video and audio content. My daughter's generation has a tendency to use the internet only and as they grow older their's will become the normal way to consume video and audio content.

Amen Brother.
I stuck up a $35 antenna that gets 65 HD channels, plugged in a $79 android box programmed it with XBMC.

Have more content than ever.

I hope you are successful, as I am sure you will be, and I understand that at 55 you have another ten years of meaningful work. I don’t think this economy was anybody’s plan...definitely not mine either.

I hope the area you live in has good prospects...

I went through what you are going through regarding work/business.

I too am 55.

We have purposely closed down our business to the point it is only my Dad and a helper who work now. And that is because my Dad "needs" to work or he would go mad.

I refuse to pay the beast any more than I legally must so a "paycheck" is out of the question.

Now I concentrate on making an income sans payroll taxes... (FICA and all that crap) I buy, sell, and trade and make a legal income that way. I pay taxes on the profit income only and then bank the rest to earn interest income.

I am done with running a business...!

Frankly I hate to see the old broadcast TV stations and radio stations fade.

I understand they are expensive to operate, but internet just will not do for solid emergency communication.

Sad to see shortwave fading.
Jeez we were doing digital video pic and digital audio on shortwave before there were was an internet.

Goes half way round the world.

"or brand names meant something. ge is selling it’s appliance division to electrolux. I don’t even know where ge is building their crap anymore."

You are aware now that Sears and Roebuck is now owned by K-Mart, right?
