GOVERNOR PERRY WILL PERSONALLY BRIEF NATIONAL GUARD TROOPS ABOUT TO BE DEPLOYED
Breitbart ^ | August 13, 2014 | By Bob Price

HOUSTON, Texas — Members of the Texas National Guard currently in training at Camp Swift, near Austin, have been told to stand by for a personal briefing from Texas Governor Rick Perry. Perry is expected to arrive at Camp Swift this morning to brief the troops on his expectations of their deployment.

It is still not clear as to exactly where this first batch of troops will be deployed, according to one of the soldiers currently at Camp Swift. The soldier has been at the camp receiving training this week and expects to be deployed somewhere along the border this weekend.

Approximately 300 soldiers are in this particular training group. He also revealed the soldiers will be traveling and patrolling in military vehicles.

The first group of soldiers who were trained last week have been ordered to remain at Camp Swift to train the following waves of soldiers. They will remain at Swift for two months.

The soldiers are also being trained in the use of advanced surveillance systems such as the Ratheon LRAS (Long Range Advanced Scout) systems. These systems can be used to detect illegal crossings of the border, but also to search for people being smuggled through ranch lands to avoid border patrol checkpoints like the one in Falfurrias.

Public Information Officers from both the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) and the Texas National Guard have been extremely tight lipped about releasing any information regarding the deployment.

When the National Guard was on the border in NM and AZ, they were allowed no ammo and were not to have contact with illegals. Most were running errands for Border Patrol and a few were driving around and in lookout towers acting as spotters for BP. If a governor calls up the guard as opposed to the state doing it, the state must pay. I imagine the governors of AZ and NM think it is a little pricey for theater.

I read an article a couple weeks ago that stated the only way the NG Perry is sending to the border could be fully armed- w/ammo and have power to detain/arrest illegals and not turn them over to feds is if the governor deputizes each one of them as Texas Rangers. Not sure if that is true but it was a reporter in Texas that wrote the article. So if he deputizes the NG as Texas Rangers then I will pay attention.

I assumed they would be unarmed

Previous call ups of national guard by governor Perry were armed.

The Guardsmen will form 12 armed security platoons and man traffic crossovers along the Rio Grande River. Each platoon will be accompanied by a Border Patrol agent and a local police officer, according to a release by the governor's office. The Guardsmen are issued weapons, but whether they carry them will depend on the mission, Meehan said.

You need to go outside once in a while for some fresh air.

I guarantee you gunner gets a hell of a lot more fresh air a week than 99% of the posters here. With me knowing the truth methinks you speak from your but a wee bit.

Some of the illegals certainly are armed. In fact more and more are armed.

I hope the NG issues ammo, and ROE. Otherwise, someone will get killed.

Bingo! These troops are being sent down to the border to secure it. They’re being sent down there to be photographed.

I think the problem is his wariness to commit to a mission that will invite perpetual expense on Texans, when it is a federal issue.

And the Texas Constitution as far as defining militia, is unconstitutional because it makes it unlawful for the citizenry to organize under arms. Texans need to start there, IMO.

"Hmmmm...I just wonder how many of the FReeper naysayers blasting Gov. Perry on this thread are hoping (and working) for another Romney run for POTUS?"

Well, I'm not going to blast him. He's doing what he can with what he has, considering that the dung beetle currently scuttling around the White House has completely abandoned his Constitutional obligations.

False.

Initial reports suggested the Guardsmen were unarmed. However, Border Patrol spokesman Gustavo Soto said the teams "had rifles and ammunition from Day One."

Not all NG were armed; it depended on the assignment. Building roads and fences, not armed. Entry Identification Team, armed.

I agree Jim, all the governors should be sending armed Guards to the Southern border.

Where do you get that? I did search over the text and the only mention of militia is the section I posted.
Furthermore, nothing in the TX BoR seems to support your claim:

Art, Sec. 23. RIGHT TO KEEP AND BEAR ARMS.
Every citizen shall have the right to keep and bear arms in the lawful defense of himself or the State; but the Legislature shall have power, by law, to regulate the wearing of arms, with a view to prevent crime.

No ammo... that would be profoundly stupid.

Sounds to me more like a pending deployment to Fort Hood for Muslim and Queergendered tolerance training.

YEP.

Armed.

Texas Adjutant General John Nichols said troops will be armed for their safety, but when asked if their weapons would be loaded would say only that ammunition would be in magazines.

"That's about as far as I want to go because if the cartel folks understand what we can and can't do then they may take advantage of that," Nichols told The Associated Press.
