Watching live on Fox 2 News. Looking like things may quiet down, police just announced over a bull horn that if the crowd does not disperse and go home they are subject to arrest. So far, no violence that has been reported. Still very tense.

Fleeing felon laws allow the police to shoot felons who are running away in certain cases.

Not that it applies in this case as far as we know...but clearly the police can, under certain circumstances, legally shoot and kill you if you are running away.
I think it is a very rare case to shoot someone as they are running...like maybe someone who just shot people and had a loaded gun at side...
This is the most info I’ve heard from both sides about what happened. Summing up from this info, I feel that we in 2014 America have a serious civility problem. Race is a factor only because of chips on shoulders, attitudes.
In an earlier generation, teens OF ANY RACE would never have arrogantly walked down the middle of the street, or, at the very least, would have gone to the sidewalk when asked by a member of law enforcement.
Also, in previous generations, in general the officer would have spoken kindly, though I know that in some places he might have made a crude racial comment. But today we have the police using the F word to ask them to move. I feel that such hostility is not professional.
Small behavioral changes in our society and these incidents wouldn’t happen.
Two subgroups of our society that are objectively rude and hostile. The police. They’ve seen it all, so they approach an interaction with jaded hostility. This needs to stop.
Urban African Americans. Often there is a huge chip on their shoulders when dealing with law enforcement and even authority. Rather than do as most whites do, which is to say “I’m sorry officer, will do” and to comply, they often (and I’ve seen it) get defensive and want to “be real” and give the officer some back talk.
I’m sure urban black parents teach their kids to be polite to the people at church. But there is too much to gain from peer acceptance for their young to be “strong” to the enemy, the police.
We have a problem with civility. As with Trayvon, decent behavior would have kept them alive.

Not even Sherlock Holmes and Miss Marple, never mind Lord Peter Wimsey, can actually tell us WTF actually happened "in the car," or for that matter exactly WTF happened anywhere else.
Note the two "witnesses" don't even say young Michael the Martyr was in the car. Was he? How did he get in the car? Who fired the shot in the car? Who had the gun? If Michael the Martyr took the cop's gun, how did the cop get it back? Cop treated at hospital for facial injuries? What were they? Any pictures? First story was that a shoplifting complaint had been made. Is that part true?
All we have so far is a live cop, 8 pieces of brass, a dead kid 30+ feet away from the cop, and not a hell of a lot else to go on except restless and destructive natives.
Meantime, 2500+ black people were shot in Chicago last year. This interests no one ... least of all The Man from Martha's Vineyard? Benghazi be quieter than that!
