The “military” in that military coup, is essentially the Iranian military.
If Irbil falls to ISIS,, it will probably signal the final genocide of Iraq’s ancient Christian communities.

I’ve said before and I’ll repeat it, the only one’s the U.S. should be supporting are the Kurds
because
1. Maliki cannot win because he cannot govern because he cannot get a coalition of Sunni’s, Shia and Kurds to continue backing him, which leaves
2. the requirement that his own Shia aligned party quit backing him, which they have now done, and him stepping down (which he has not done).
3. And, since the latter of the two things in 2. was not going to happen, then one way or another Maliki would be trying to hang on with a majorities from all Iraq’s groups backing him, insuring his ineffective and unwinnable government would continue.
4. The Maliki government cannot stop ISIS from cleaving off a sizable portion of the Sunni provinces, from Iraqi government control. That will force Maliki to align himself even more, for support with Iran, further alienate the Sunnis and the Kurds.
So, as I say, one way or another Mailiki was going to blow it and,
5. in as much the Kurds are our only real friends in Iraq, the Kurds are the ones, the only ones we should be supporting - [as long as Maliki is in power and as long as there is no government in Baghdad that garners wide public support from the three major groups, the Sunni & Kurds and the Shia].

Doesn’t matter. Obama has been the mack daddy for six years but you need to understand, this is “Bush’s fault”. The jug eared one said so just previous to stepping out on another hard earned vacation.
(CNN) — Iraqi troops, security forces and tanks surged into Baghdad on Sunday as political turmoil deepened over who should lead the country.
Military tanks were deployed to several neighborhoods in central Baghdad, two Iraqi police officials told CNN. The officials said there are also significantly more troops in Baghdad’s Green Zone, the secure area where many government buildings, the military headquarters and the U.S. Embassy are located.
The precise reason for the growing number of troops in the Iraqi capital was unclear. But CNN military analyst retired Lt. Col. Rick Francona described it as an “ominous” development that signals the Iraqi Prime Minister doesn’t want to hand over power.
This type of political turmoil was not possible when Saddam was in power. He kept the Shiites and and Sunnis in check and also left Christians alone to worship as they pleased.
Iraq and the majority of the Middle East only know strongman rule. Since the overthrow of Saddam lawlessness has ruled supreme in Iraq. It was be that way until another strongman comes along to kick ass and take names and restore order. That’s the way it is in Iraq. The way it’s always been and the way it always will be.
