Science Fiction Becomes Science-Fact: Two Strategies for Repairing Humans (regeneration)
Slate ^ | Sonia Arrison

Not long ago, it would have sounded like science fiction to discuss growing human organs in the lab or re-writing DNA. Yet today both are realities that will change the world and allow for longer and healthier lives.

Already, lab-grown bladders, windpipes and blood vessels have been successfully created and implanted into humans. Most recently, tissue engineering pioneer Dr. Anthony Atala and his team at the Wake Forest Institute for Regenerative Medicine announced another breakthrough: lab-made vaginas—one of the most complex organs made to date. In four girls with MRKH syndrome, a medical condition in which the vagina and uterus are underdeveloped or absent, Dr. Atala’s team was able to create new organs that functioned normally, dramatically increasing each patient’s quality of life.

To grow the organs, the scientists created scaffolds in the proper size and shape and lined the structures with each patient’s vaginal epithelial cells on one side and their muscle cells on the other. The structure was then placed in an incubator for about a week before being implanted into each patient. The vagina is harder to grow than other organs because it highly elastic and secretes mucus.

“Dr. Anthony Atala and his team at the Wake Forest Institute for Regenerative Medicine announced another breakthrough: lab-made vaginas”

I predict Dr. Atala will soon be rich enough to buy Bill Gates and Warren Buffett with pocket money.

About the only existing natural means of very long life is regression-regeneration. This means reverting from an adult form to a young juvenile form in which you have a whole body rejuvenation. A body rebuilt with stem cells using a DNA design. However, this includes the brain, so it is likely that most of the memory would be lost.

This is the technique used by the “immortal jellyfish”, Turritopsis dohrnii.

Don’t assume it is far easier because a jellyfish is a simpler organism than a human. In fact, many jellyfish have more chromosomes than humans, so technically they are more complicated than we are.

IORNY:

On one end of the spectrum we have a large number of Godless people devoting their lives and spending fortunes on expanding the right
to kill babies in the womb.

On the other end of the spectrum we have a sizable number of people devoting their lives and spending fortunes on learning better ways to
heal the human body, eradicate disease and extend the human lifespan.

Nope.

As Ron White said, "You can't fix stupid". Granny may love her new vagina, but a new mind isn't available.

Several weeks ago on a science channel I saw an article on a guy who lost the tip of his finger between that first joint and the nail.

Using a substance created by his brother who was experimenting with tissue regeneration (it may have been Dr. Atala, I don't remember), the intire digit including bone and nail were regrown and there was no evidence of scarring whatsoever.

They gave another example of a wounded military person who had most of his thigh blown away which normally would have left his leg useless. But thru this experimental drug/powder, most of his thigh has regrown and he now has complete use of the leg with little loss of strength and movement. They even showed him jogging......

I marvel at the wonders of science and technology that have developed in the 100 years and would give anything to see what they have to offer 100 years from now.............

As a side note, the primary component of this new experimental substance is pig bladders...........go figure.
