President Obama's use of executive orders in historical terms
National Constitution Center ^ | August 5, 2014 | NCC Staff

The current controversy over President Barack Obama's use of executive orders has many Republicans steamed and Democrats on the defensive. But has the President really issued more orders that his predecessors?

In terms of executive orders, quality counts as much as quantity, and several significant Obama executive orders have some conservatives rallying around a lawsuit against the president, as well as threatening impeachment...

The American Presidency Project keeps tabs on executive orders and their historical counterparts dating back to the George Washington administration. The presidents who used orders and proclamations the most, per year, were [Franklin] Roosevelt, Herbert Hoover and Woodrow Wilson.

Moreover, President Obama has issued the fewest executive orders per year, at 33.27 annually, since President Grover Cleveland’s first term in the White House.

It’s not how many orders he issued, it’s how unconstitutional they were.

that’s what I thought too.

It’s not the number of orders that we’re talking about. It’s whether the executive orders issued by Obama are legal and constitutional.

The liberals seem to be focusing on the number of exec. orders issued by various presidents. But not the content or effect of those orders. And not whether Obama is issuing orders dealing with subjects which should be dealt with by legislation in Congress.

Three of the most liberal left wing men ever to occupy the White House.

First place, there is no evidence republicans are steamed. None.

And why do people keep saying he wants the border open so that dems will keep the senate?

He doesn’t care who wins the senate. He is as ignorant of the democrats’ needs and wishes as he is towards those of the republicans.

He doesn’t need no stinkin’ senate.

I think that is interesting to think about some more...

Perhaps Ø does care who holds the Sinate post-November, and prefers it go into R hands.

Ø is an O’Dinga/Zelaya/Chavez wannabee. To that end, more chaos and crisis is better. No legislation of note will be passed and signed by Ø anyway in the next 2 1/2 years. The more chaotic DC becomes, the more despotic our despotic-wannabee can become, with not just EOs, but regulations as well. He can do all he needs at this point from the oval office, pen/phone in hand.

Oh, and if needed, there are over a billion hollow point bullets...

The whole thing about the number of Executive Orders is a straw man argument designed to draw attention away from the real disagreement about what the Orders are about and the criminality of many of them.

Obama does not want a Republican senate. As long as things die in a democrat senate Obama can blame republicans and then go play golf. With the house, senate and SCOTUS in republican hands, Obama will have to work. Something he is unfamiliar with.

if there is any advantage to the Senate being in control of the Senate it will be as Cruz takes Chairmanship of one or more key committees. They won’t let him be in charge of the senate.

OH NO!

McConnell in charge?

Someone would have to tell me why he’ll be any different from Reid, or boehner, for that matter

Lots and lots of fantastic, nail-it-to-the-wall responses.

Thank you FReepers, this is what I enjoy most about FR.

A lot of the previous executive orders were to proclaim “national hamburger month”, etc.

If there is a prime moment to reign in E0 power by legislative action, be prepared - it will occur in 2017 with a new Repub President. The ‘Rats will be aghast at EO carnage to the Constitution, just in time to make sure Republicans don’t do the same as Ø did. Indeed, they may even go further than a Republican Congress - to “lock-in” Ø’s EO’s. They’ll tack on to legislation all sorts of checks that will effectively make it harder for a POTUS to strike old EO’s with a new EO.

Not if a constitutionalist gets in. And really the only way for a republican to win is with a constitutionalist running

Jeb, Christie, Romney?

There is no way in creation for that to happen

It will take someone running as a lets fix this mess the only way it will get fixed. With the rule of law
