If you think about it, it’s really not contagious in the sense that you could get it just standing next to someone. This is a blood and body fluids contagious disease. The epidemic sprawl in Africa is due to substandard medical facilities and a lack of environmental cleanliness. I’ve read stories where ebola victims are literally left to die in the sun where they expire and their bodies blow up like balloons and burst. The blood and guts are consumed by carrion fowl and bugs, rats, etc. which then spread it among the communities.
I’m not saying it’s impossible that it could spread here, but it’s nothing something you’re just going to catch my standing next to an infected person on a subway or plane. You have to ingest some of their bodily fluids to get sick.
Also remember that while the mortality rate IS high, it is survivable. And while there’s no known cure, people who survive are immune to reinfection, meaning a vaccine could likely be developed, as I understand it.
With even odds at best. I don't like 50/50 chances... especially when many survivors have ongoing chronic disabilities.
I heard it was closer to 80/20, but I think that depends on the medical facilities.
The nurse from the USA now in Emory was truly not nursing but assisting on scrub down and waste removal of those that were providing healthcare to the ebola patients.
She was not directly exposed yet.....

You do not have to ingest body fluids to get ill. I get so tired of the misinformation. All you need is infected body fluid to come in contact with a mucous membrane or microscopic cut on your skin. think sneeze, etc... And ebola victims shed body fluids everywhere. Or you put your hand on a bus seat where someone with ebola sneezed then put your hand to your face
While not airborn (at least not proven yet) this is a highly contagious disease that has been spread to people wearing full protective gear. I would not want to be on a plane or subway next to someone with active ebola.
I was hoping he was in line for the annual pilgrimage!
Of course, Hussein 0bama is bent on doing so in any way possible, even if it means flying them into Atlanta .

I refer to him as Obola these days .... it’s a name well-earned since everything he touches he manages to kill such as our healthcare system, economy, foreign policies, border security .... and it goes on & on. In addition to an ambassador, Seals & a border patrol agent, it will be everyday Americans soon - all the diseases coming across the border at his ‘invitation’ and now Ebola.
Scrub down? Waste removal? How is that not direct exposure?
Having worked in hospitals, I can tell you that even mishandling a red waste bag could get you stuck with a needle or worse.
If it does become an epidemic, don’t count on first class medical treatment to be available for long even in the USA.
The transmission methods is the part of this story that I am watching closely. From very reliable sources I have learned one can catch Ebola from
contact with infected animals (pigs, bats, monkeys)
contact with "droppings" of infected animals
eating any part of an infected animal
touching anything excreted (blood, sweat, urine, fetal matter) by an infected person.
any part of your skin touches any part of an infected persons skin
inhaling the droplets an infected person exhales via sneeze cough.
touching any item an infected person has recently touched.
touching a hard surface that has recently been in contact with anything wore, excreted or touched by an infected person who is dead or nearly dead from Ebola.
I am sure there are other means of Ebola spreading. It appears to me that Ebola is very contagious and could easily spread in a high density US city. I also think things are much worse then we are being told. Only 1500 infected? Only 800+ dead in West Africa? Really? I think way more.
Daily Mail reporting families in Liberia are dragging their dead family members out into the streets so as to avoid quarantine of themselves. Photos quite horrific. To say this thing is out of control would be an understatement...
I wasn’t trying to deliberately misinform, you mistake my intent. I’m saying that oftentimes the sick are left out to die and rot and fester in Africa. Our healthcare facilities are much better equipped (not necessarily prepared) than any out of a third world country.
Further, while those in heavily populated cities like NYC, Chicago, and Los Angeles are at higher risk due to higher potentially infected people, those of us in rural America are not going to be scrambling to buy PPE.

I’m not going to live my life in dreadful fear of something that’s not widespread. I’m not saying it couldn’t be, but I also don’t live in a major population center where it could spread over the course of a few days. I’m not deliberately spreading misinformation, this is information I’ve gleaned from different sources.
You mentioned infected animals, and I pointed out in parts of Africa that these bodies are being consumed by local predators which are then exposing other animals or people. If they’re a food animal, then those consuming the animal are getting sick.
Same goes with inhaling sneezes or coughs. This is obviously direct exposure, same as it would be if a TB patient coughed on you.
Now the touching of items or skin of infected, that I’ve not read. Are you saying that the very oils of a person’s body, those left behind on doorknobs and bus seats, are contagious as well? I don’t think that’s the case. I’ve read blood, vaginal secretions, semen, sputum, CSF, urine, and feces are contagion carriers, but since most of us avoid those, I’m not too worried about it. Also, if your skin is intact, accidental, brief exposure to one of these fluids is not a death sentence.
What you’re proposing is that every excretion down to simple sweat touching a finger is going to infect you, and I’m dubious of that claim.
Not yet. I can’t help but think they should have the results back by now...but nothing.
So according to the Daily Mail, families are dragging their dead relatives out to avoid exposure. Is the very act of dragging that body out of the house exposing those family members?
