Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy ruled the box office this weekend with a fantastic $94 million. That's easily the biggest debut ever for an August release; the previous record holder, The Bourne Ultimatum, opened to $69.3 million in 2007.
Meanwhile, James Brown biopic Get On Up took third place with a modest $14 million debut.
This weekend reversed the box office slump in a big way: the top 12 earned $172.6 million, which is up a whopping 40 percent from the same frame last year. With a packed line-up of major releases coming up, this August is almost certainly going to be the biggest one ever.
Among recent Marvel movies, Guardians of the Galaxy's opening is nearly on par with Captain America: The Winter Soldier's $95 million, and is noticeably higher than Thor: The Dark World's $85.7 million. That's pretty remarkable considering the Guardians were unknown to most moviegoers a year ago, and have few obvious connections to the Avengers at the moment.

Americans are really bored?
Going to the movies, it’s the new summer vacation.
I’m numb with awe.
My 35 year old daughter saw it this weekend. She liked it, but said it’s not a kid’s movie despite the cartoonish fluffy raccoon.
Interesting Movie, I loved the whole plotline with the Green Lady Gamora and how she had been biding her time next to her greatest enemy just waiting patiently for a time to strike.
Rocket the Raccoon was a breath of fresh air as he didnl;t come off as a cutesy charchter for the point of being cute and actually was a dark and tragic charcter or at least it was hinted he was.
The guy trying to avendge his dead family was interesting, he was very much another tragic character who was filled with vengence and despite this worked through it after realising that Gamora was in the same boat and she suffered more because she forced herself to live next to her greatest enemy in order to get justice.
StarLord was the Glue that held it all togther and I loved the one Guy from the millitary that was instemental in saving the “federation” main planet because he belived StarLord’s Hillarious message.

He was awesome and was the “cutesy charchter” but not overdone and somewhat hillarious at certain points.
Loved when he skewed a whole bunch of minions then whipped them around for a bit and then gave the team a kinda goofy look as if to say “Did Groot do good?”. It was hillarious.
So many good lines, and many time the lines were drowned out by laughter inthe theatre, will definately be getting the Blue-Ray/ DVD.

I saw it last night.
Best movie I have seen in a while. Not saying it is high brow, or even a thinking mans show. It is the 80’s Classic “buddy movie” in the Marvel universe.
No overt political commentary (unless you count the peace treaty). No anti God stuff (and some surprising things on that end). Some crude jokes, but mostly good.
A definite addition to my collection when it gets released.

I thought it was interesting in that they signed a peace treaty but they showed it wasn;t going to stop a fanatic like Rowan (sp) from attackign them. Kinda like how signing a treaty only works if both sides want it. Otherwise it will be used by the side that doesn’t want peace as an advantage to them.
A great movie! I consider this the best Marvel movie so far. Some nice sentimental moments mixed with comfortable humor and solid dialog. Rocket and Groot worked better than I ever expected. The director nailed the tone.
This was very much a kids movie. Heck the matinee I went too had lots of kids and they ate it up. It is an excellent movie IMO.
Our family went to see it last night and it was refreshing and well worth the trip.
If you go, make sure to sit through the credits to see the VERY cute vignette placed at the end. It sets things up for a potentially great sequel.
. . .and even that is getting pricey. Tickets for a family of 4, a bucket of popcorn and drinks for everyone, you’re generally 75 bucks, even more some places. Heck, my local DRIVE-IN (we still have one. . . ) charges 8 bucks a head, albeit for double features. . .
