It took paramedics 19 minutes to arrive at the home of a Florida State University professor shot in his garage after a neighbor called 911 – with the dispatcher’s confusion contributing to the delay and one EMS unit replaced by another, authorities said.
Dan Markel, 41, was shot as he drove his car into his garage on July 18. The killer fired a single bullet through the driver’s window, striking him just beneath the jawline, sources told ABC News.
A neighbor called 911, noting that he happened upon Markel’s car because he’d been worried about a recent string of break-ins. The neighbor said he found Markel sitting in the driver’s seat of his car, his head covered in blood. Markel was still alive, the man told a dispatcher. But he wasn’t responsive.
“You need to send an ambulance in a hurry, an EMT,” the neighbor said, according to audio of the call released by police Thursday.
“I think you need to hurry.”

Because the dispatcher didn’t initially hear the caller mention anything about a gunshot wound, the response was delayed.
“The officer is going to be there first. [The EMT] is not going to come until we figure out what’s going on, but they are on the way as well, OK?” the dispatcher said.
“They better be if this guy’s got a shot … living,”

Somebody out there might have a motive.
It’s interesting. For my part, I always thought the most compelling justification for incarceration was not retribution, but, rather, mere prevention of further crimes by the confined perpetrators.
I’m more of a fan of forced restitution plus 20% per the Torah.
I’ll not quibble with the source. Sometimes they just don’t have it to cough up, having dissipated it fruitlessly.
No doubt that would be the majority of cases. All I'm saying is that prison should make them work and send what would otherwise be a fair paycheck to the victims as restitution.
That’s fair. And, besides, fruitful prison labor keeps them away from a life of crime victimizing others (see: prevention :-).
And the more fruitful they become the sooner they get out.

When an offender breaks the law, justice requires that they forfeit something in return. Retribution should be distinguished from vengeance. Wait, wait jes a minute. Fust ah haffa axe you some quessions. An if you argues wif me, ah’m gonna hang up, gnome sayin’?
If you live within four miles of a ambulance station...you might get the typical arrival within eight minutes. From the rural area where I grew up....it’ll take twenty minutes minimum for an ambulance to arrive. In some cases, you’d be better off for a neighbor to throw you in the back of a truck and just haul off at seventy miles an hour.
This is all leading folks to push for chopper-ambulance services now. The chopper can usually be at the house in twenty minutes and take you to a real hospital sixty miles away in a matter of twenty minutes.
This was in Statesboro GA in 1986. They didn't even have 911 set up. We had to look up the phone number of the ambulance service.
That’s part of why we have the right to keep and bear arms. A 44 magnum responds at around 1500 fps. A cop responds in around 10-20 minutes. I can do the math.

Thanks! Son will always have TBI. He doesn’t remember what happened. He doesn’t remember anything about his three weeks in ICU though we have gone back for visits and to say thank you to those who gave him such great care. It strengthens their faith to see someone survive against the odds. Watching the trauma unit in action for those three weeks was eye opening. What great people with great skills! But even greater is their faith!
A bad 911 service is unacceptable. Every single second counts.
It was probably the ex wife. They were in a legal dispute.
