The Future of Iced Coffee (Has Anybody Tried Blue Bottle New Orleans Iced Coffee?)
The Atlantic ^ | August 1, 2014 | Alexis C. Madrigal

I have seen the future of iced coffee.

There I was, wandering the grocery-store aisles—when suddenly, next to the kombucha, opposite the rotisserie chickens, I spotted something I never thought I’d live to see.

A blue and white carton—like the half-pints of milk that come on elementary school lunch trays—emblazoned with the words Blue Bottle New Orleans Iced Coffee.

This coffee is legendary in the Bay Area, and now that Blue Bottle has expanded to New York, I’m sure its name echoes on the streets of Manhattan and Williamsburg, too. Brewed with chicory, cut with whole milk, sweetened with cane sugar, it’s a cold coffee beverage that is at once sophisticated and unpretentious. It’s not an austere challenge to the Starbucks-trained palate like so much of high-brow coffee culture. It just tastes good in an interesting way.

The caffeine addict in me has to ask... Has anybody tried this iced coffee yet and is it as good as the author makes out? Hopefully my area gets it in the stores next year. Gotta try it out.

So far the best coffee I find in South Florida comes in Miami at those little panaderia type stores with the sliding stores where they serve up miraculous shots of Cuban coffee in small cups.

I very much like hot coffee, but for some reason, have never been able to develop a taste for iced coffee. Maybe I’ve never had “good” iced coffee (highly likely), but for me it’s iced tea & hot coffee.

Thai iced coffee (or Vietnam) is the best.

I drink hot coffee in the morning. If any left over then I drink it as iced coffee in the afternoon. When I was a kid, iced coffee was looked upon as an oddity. I remember requesting iced coffee in a restaurant and the waitress didn't know what I was talking about.

"You mean you actually pour coffee over ice and then add milk???"

Next time you are by that place, try that coffee and report back. I am really curious. The owner sounds like an over the top quality control type guy so it might be pretty good. BTW, I chuckled in the story where it said that Howard Schultz of Starbucks wasn’t all that into drinking coffee.

More info - how to make it yourself (both include directions for Vietnamese Iced Coffee). I’ve been meaning to try PW’s method for about 2 years now and just haven’t done it.

Try drinking hot coffee in the afternoon Florida heat. BTW, I once had coupons for FREE cups of coffee at Racetrack gas stations. At first I thought I couldn’t use those coupons since I am usually on the road AFTER my morning hot coffee at home. Then I realized all I had to do was add ice and cream to the coffee. I had enough coupons for FREE iced coffee at Racetrack for the next month.

I recently had a fantastic iced coffee at a local small roaster coffee house. Their ice coffee is a cold brewed dark roast... you add the sugar and cream to taste...fantastic on a hot afternoon.

If it is the same Blue Bottle company that is out here in Oakland, prices are around $19 per pound.

I once saw a TV program showing people in India drinking tea with big leaves sitting in the same glass they were drinking from. Not tea backs to brew it. Actual leaves.

We get plenty of heat during the summer here in Michigan.

Iced coffee just sounds nasty to me but I’ve never tried it.

Back in the 80’s when I deployed to Australia, they had a great generic iced coffee in those little “brick boxes” they use for juice. It was even shelf-stable. I brought several bricks of 10 back with me. . .

My son the coffee snob often makes and drinks cold pressed coffee. We recently gave him his own roaster. I’m happy with my hot french press into which I mix a bit of my favorite protein drink. By 9:00 a.m. I’m done with caffeine for the day or I can’t sleep.

The trouble with iced coffee is that if you spill it into your lap you don’t get millions of dollars :-(
