Baker sidesteps taking position on gun control provision (middle of the road loser Charlie Baker)

The state Democratic Party today criticized Republican Charlie Baker for dismissing the significance of a gun control provision designed to give police chiefs authority to keep rifles and shotguns out of the hands of people they consider dangerous.

In an interview on NECN Tuesday, Baker declined to say whether he supported that provision, which was included in an anti-gun violence bill passed by the House, but was stripped out by the Senate.

The host, Jim Braude, pressed the gubernatorial hopeful: “Should police chiefs have that discretion?”

“I don’t think that matters, Jim,” Baker replied. “The real issue here is: They need to do a bill. And they have an opportunity. And I hope they don’t let the perfect get in the way of the good.”

By not declaring his position on the issue, Baker avoided wading into an emotional fight between gun rights activists and police chiefs, who strongly support the provision, and gun rights advocates, who say the measure infringes on their Second Amendment rights.

Negotiators for the state Senate and House of Representatives have been wrangling over the different versions of the bill, as a deadline for action approaches. Thursday is the last day of formal legislative sessions.

It seems Baker’s only interest is in gaining cocktail party bragging rights to “I was the Mass GOP’s nominee for Governor, don’t you know?” Beyond that, he has no plan. What a totally empty suit.

Baker is so totally worthless. He’s siding with the governor on the illegal “children” coming into the state.

I left my ballot blank for governor in 2010 when he was the nominee and I’ll be voting for whoever isn’t Baker or the Democrat in November. Can’t stand these types any more.

which was included in an anti-gun violence bill passed by the House, but was stripped out by the Senate.

Update: That provision has been re-instated by the Senate in a compromise bill due to be voted on today.

***to give police chiefs authority to keep rifles and shotguns out of the hands of people..***

Here is what I remember from those past days.

1962 Thomas J Dodd and Emaual Cellar proposed the first federal law on handguns.

1962; “We don’t want to take away your guns, we ONLY want to register handguns! Rifles and shotguns will not be affected”.

1964: “We only want to register all your guns, not ban them! Only Army surplus guns will be banned.”

1968: “We only want to register your guns, and ban “Saturday Night Specials” and small foreign handguns along with army surplus rifles!” (They got the ban on 5 shot bolt action army surplus rifles and handguns and small foreign pistols)

1970: “We only want to ban Saturday night specials! Large handguns and rifles will not be affected!”

1971: “According to the SCOTUS, Miller Decision, RIFLES are protected under the 2nd Amendment, handguns are not!”

1976: “We only want to ban all handguns! Long guns will not be affected!”

1981: “The NRA is a rifle organization! They should give up their handguns, and they can keep their rifles!”- Lee Grant on GMA

1984: “We must ban “assault Rifles, unsuitable or hunting!”

1989: George Bush bans import of some foreign made “assault rifles”.

1992: Assault rifle ban passed by Clinton.

2000: first calls to ban single shot .50 cal rifles...

2012 calls for MORE bans on semi auto rifles and handguns.

And so it continues.
