Ebola outbreak: Victim who sparked fears of global epidemic was on way home to US
The Telegraph ^ | 29 Jul 2014 | Rosa Prince

An Ebola victim who was allowed to board an international flight was an American citizen on his way home to the United States, it has emerged.

Patrick Sawyer worked for the Liberian government and was visiting his sister there when he developed symptoms while on a plane to Nigeria. He was quarantined on arrival in Lagos and died on Friday.

His wife, Decontee, 34, who like Mr Sawyer is originally from Liberia, currently at the heart of the terrifying Ebola outbreak, said he had been due to travel on to America where he could have become Patient Zero in a US epidemic.

The 40-year-old father-of-three is believed to have contracted the disease from his sister, whom he was caring for without knowing she had Ebola.

Mr Sawyer took two flights to get to Nigeria from Liberia, where he had attended his sister's funeral. The first took him from Monrovia to Lome in Togo, where he boarded a plane to Lagos. He collapsed at the airport on landing.

The Nigerian authorities have closed the hospital he was treated at, First Consultants Hospital in Obalende, one of the busiest parts of the city with a population of around 21 million.

Manifests of the passengers and crew who travelled on the same flights as Mr Sawyer have yet to be released

His job involved promoting trade in West Africa and he was on his way to a conference in Lagos from where he planned to travel back to the US when he fell ill with vomiting and diarrhea.

Fellow passengers on his plane were given warnings about the disease’s symptoms, which can include bleeding from the nose and mouth, but were allowed to continue on their journeys.

We still don't know where they headed and the possibility of them having caught it from him.

Yeah... Why would you not quarantine the whole plane?

It is simply unbelieveable to me that they did not. Every dog that bites with or without rabies vaccine is either quarantined or closely followed.

Not to mention possibly vomiting and having diarrhea in the restroom on the plane, and the fact that Ebola can live in dried material on a surface for several days.

Louie Farraklown is in the wings preparing a tale of how our CIA cooked up the EBOLA virus from scratch...no doubt....

I find this while mess a tad too conveniently coincidental with obie’s many SCANDALS....many of which have dropped from sight at least for the time being..

I may be wearing my tinfoil hat a tad too tight but this smells very strange

Right. So the hundreds of people who show up with vomiting, fever, and diarrhea at any ER are not even going to be considered dangerous until it is too late.

Oh no, we are already in deep deep trouble potentially.

Ebola was probably all over that plane and it can live for several days in dried material.

CDC

Also what they are saying is that they have it down to 60% with early treatment but if that is true why has Kent Brantley gone from stable and up using his computer yesterday to critical today? In only a few days since testing positive. Nope. Don't believe it.

The reason this outbreak has been so deadly is because this strain is very very deadly. There is no better proof than what we are seeing and reading.

Bring Out Your Dead

Post to me or FReep mail to be on/off the Bring Out Your Dead ping list.

The purpose of the “Bring Out Your Dead” ping list (formerly the “Ebola” ping list) is very early warning of emerging pandemics, as such it has a high false positive rate.

So far the false positive rate is 100%.

At some point we may well have a high mortality pandemic, and likely as not the “Bring Out Your Dead” threads will miss the beginning entirely.

*sigh* Such is life, and death...

Me too but I am alarmed because they reported him stable, up and working on his computer Monday morning. Now he is critical....very rapid course downhill.

Still - With God all is possible.

In Guinea, 415 cases, including 314 fatal cases

Do the math. Just under 80% and probably hit that or higher when the others died who were still struggling with it at the time they made the announcement.

I work in healthcare and let me tell you, anything that gets through the precautions they were using is far more deadly than I could have believed. We are in serious trouble if it got spread from that man on the plane. In fact, this is like a bad novel, almost perfect for a disaster.

Its not like you can get it by walking past someone, unless they sneezed on you and that droplet got INTO your system. In general contact that is not easy to do.

Its not like the flu.

That said, it is creepy Stephen King stuff.
