German NGO says TTIP will undermine global food security

The planned Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) between the EU and the US threatens the concept of sustainable food security, the development NGO Brot für die Welt announced at a presentation of its annual report, in Berlin.

Development politicians agree: The key to fighting world hunger is strengthening smallholders in developing and newly industrialized countries.

“With the planned TTIP agreement, the EU and US are not only defining rules on trade between each other, but indirectly also respective trade with third states,” said Cornelia Füllkrug-Weitzel, President of Brot für die Welt.

The two large trade powers “could intensify pressure on states outside the agreement to give up protection and support for their own markets,” the aid worker said. …

That’s right. They refer to themselves as evangelical Christian; I don’t think they’re related to the US “collective Christian” (Catholic and Protestant) group with the same name in English.

Evangelical (evangelisch in German) usually denotes Protestant as apart from Roman Catholic in Germany, IIRC.

The EU are idiots when it comes to food production. They waste an incredible amount of land with biofuel production and solar farms.

They could have a point. The third and developing worlds should not be discouraged from developing agriculture. This does not mean drop TTIP but buy food from other parties as well.

The third world and “developing world” are one and the same, AFAIK. The latter term came about after the “fall of communism” that really didn’t happen.
