Chikungunya continues to spread across the U.S., infecting nearly 600

More cases of chikungunya, a painful virus spread by mosquitos, are being reported across the country.

The Centers for Disease Control has listed a total of 497 cases in the U.S. in 35 states, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands, 197 locally transmitted. Examiner.com reports that other state and local health agencies noted 40 cases, bringing the total to 537.

The outbreak is due to a recent epidemic that started late last year in the Caribbean. The first two locally transmitted stateside cases were reported in Florida late last week.

"The arrival of chikungunya virus, first in the tropical Americas and now in the United States, underscores the risks posed by this and other exotic pathogens," Roger Nasci, a mosquito expert at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said in a statement.

Tampa Bay Rays pitcher Joel Peralta was placed on the 15-day disabled list after contracting what he believes is the virus. He had recently spent time home in the Dominican Republic, where the disease is currently active.

Yesterday, North Carolina marked its tenth case of the bug-borne illness. All who have it there had recently traveled outside the U.S. Dallas officials confirmed a case on Tuesday, also someone who had traveled to the Caribbean.

Wish they would bring back DDT, among other chemicals. Every night this week trucks have gone through out neighborhood in the Houston suburbs doing a fogging application. But then it rained again this morning. All for naught.

Maybe if we could stop tropical mosquitos at the border we wouldn’t have these outbreaks.

Is it contagious, as in from human to human via cough droplets or other body fluids?
How long does a bout ususally last week to ten days?
I’m trying to educate and prepare myself in case folks around here start getting this disease.

Are they sure it didn’t come in with some of the unscreened illegal alien “children” who then got bitten by our domestic mosquitoes?

Of course not. If that were 'true', then there would be reports of immigrant children with chikungunya and people in Texas getting it.

Texas confirms state’s first chikungunya case

Also, there would have been cases reported in MEXICO .

Chikungunya virus spreads to Mexico from the Caribbean -

See ? You must be wrong. There is nothing to worry about.

: )
