Bill Maher Fears He Will Lose His Job if Rupert Murdoch Buys Time Warner (VIDEO)

If Rupert Murdoch succeeds in acquiring Time Warner, he will almost definitely need to divest CNN. But the deal would make the 21st Century Fox head the proud owner of HBO, home to frequent Fox adversary Bill Maher.

On Wednesday, Maher published a guest column in The Hollywood Reporter, imagining what would happen to his long-running HBO show if Murdoch takes over the network.

Maher begins by saying he’s “against” the merger but never saw it coming. “So many ways for a guy like me to lose his job, but I never dreamed these two would marry,” he writes. “I thought they were both too big. I should know by now, in American business, nothing is ever too big.”

He goes on to use the potential deal as a platform to criticize the increasing consolidation of America’s media companies: “There’s a terrible price to pay for this. (I mean besides the terrible price I personally will pay when Rupert takes over HBO and my show becomes Paste-Eating Time With Steve Doocy.)” Maher ties the recent viral Comcast customer service call to a culture that makes it nearly impossible to switch cable companies, credit cards or insurance because the near-monopolies that exist in those areas.

As much as he fears his own termination, the reality is that Maher’s job would probably be safe even if Murdoch does buy Time Warner. The last thing the Fox chief needs is to make Maher a martyr and have some opposing media conglomerate swoop in an snatch him up.

A couple of months ago, when Murdoch purchased Harlequin books, Maher imagined what that label’s steamy softcore porn would sound like with a Fox News slant.

If I were Maher, I’d worry more about losing my mind, perhaps for a second time.

A mine is a terrible thing to lose!

It is even worse when you lose a gold mine! Calling the Lost Dutchman. Calling the Lost Dutchman!

Murdoch is about money not ideology. Have you ever seen what airs on the Fox network?

If Maher would keep making him money, Murdoch would be happy to retain his services.

Besides foiling Comcast/NBC from getting their hands on the broadband business, another reason favoring his acquisition of T-W...

Bill Maher: “There’s a terrible price to pay for this. (I mean besides the terrible price I personally will pay when Rupert takes over HBO and my show becomes Paste-Eating Time With Steve Doocy.)”

Which would in fact represent a significant improvement over Maher's current show, appropriately titled "Bill Maher's Booger-Eating Bonanza!"

Maker acts like this is bad. If he disappeared tomorrow, no one but his agent would miss him.

Mr. Murdoch employs Geraldo Rivera, James Carville, Bob Beckel, Juan Williams, Kirsten Powers and Dennis Kucinich. He has little to worry about.

he’d have to do almost a 100% cleanup and detoxification to cut through the stench of that channel!

Maybe you haven't noticed how rank FX has became.

We seem to be sufficiently desensitized now to accept the crudest of sex scenes and filthy dialogs, that no one even bothers to complain anymore.

Once the Supreme court accepted wardrobe malfunctions, I knew the gates were opened.

Maher is a Murdoch-type guy. The only reason he would fire him is if he went too hard after Murdoch’s girl Hillary.

If I talked like Bill Maher, the last thing I would be worried about was just losing my job. I’m surprised someone hasn’t Kerrigan’ed him.

If Murdoch knows there is enough room for “both views,” why don’t any of his channels carry the conservative view?

Maher should be worried but not because Murdoch disagrees with what Maher says. Murdoch could give a s___t about what Maher says. Maher should be worried because HBO pays him a huge salary for zero results. Murdoch will look at him and that other clown, Oliver, and see an opportunity to cut some overpriced, non-producing “talent.”

Fire him and a few more on Foxnews. Fair & Balance does not mean you need to employ people undermining the country.
