Canadian mayor dies after wasp attack near Quebec home
NEW YORK DAILY NEWS ^ | July 23, 2014 | Meg Wagner

More than 15 wasps stung Lucie Roussel's legs near her Quebec home. She became La Prairie's mayor in 2005 and recently won reelection to a third term.

...

Paramedics gave her an EpiPen to treat an allergic reaction, but it didn't help, La Prairie spokeswoman Chantal Charron said.

The 51-year-old mayor, who was apparently not allergic to bees, died at a nearby hospital from multiple stings and shock

...

She leaves behind two teenage children — her daughter, Constance, and her son, Antonin.

Her husband died several years ago from a heart attack

As soon as the temps warm up here in eastern Washington they start coming out on my farm. I used to buy a case of the 20 foot shooting foam spray. And then one spring we had a pair of barn swallows nest under my back porch. Of course they are very messy and we tried shooing them away but then I noticed I didn’t have near the number of wasps at my back porch. Today we eagerly await the swallows arrival, we now have several nesting pairs, and I only buy 1 can of spray just for standby. They can flat wipe them stinging bastards out!

When I was a child (around 7)walking barefooted, I stepped on a nest of ground wasps.

Got stung about 7 or 8 times. Hurt like the dickens.

My grandmothers took me into the house and made a poultice of baking soda, and some other stuff, seemed to do the job pretty well.

The good news is that we can track them on radar and shoot them down with THAAD

I did the same with allowing spiders to control the flys in the barn instead of expensive auto sprayers. Occasionally I have to take a web down over a stall but I don’t kill the spider. And man some of the webs are Hugh!

My swallows are like have my own private air force fighter jets versus Jap Zero wasps!

There had to be more to this than a few wasp bites.

I’m sure that I’m not the only one here that has been attacked at a wasp nest without any ill effect beyond a bunch of sore bumps.

From Wiki:

The hornets can fly up to 100 kilometres (60 mi) in a single day, at speeds of up to 40 km/h (25 mph)[13]

“You don’t have to be allergic if enough of them sting you.”

Yikes, I did not know that.

May this poor woman rest in peace. Terrible for her children, they are orphans now. What a way to lose your remaining parent. Just an awful story.

Was Tequila one of her ingredients?

Tequila is fermented Agave juice, and has the same effect as Agave or Aloe has on stings, stops the pain quickly.

You don't have to be allergic if enough of them sting you. The woman in the story was not allergic, yet 15 stings was enough to do her in.
