Michele Bachmann Says She Might Seek Presidency in 2016
RCP ^ | 07/23/2014 | Scott Conroy

Though set to retire from the U.S. House after her term expires at the end of this year, Michele Bachmann may not be done with electoral politics.

The Minnesota congresswoman and 2012 Republican presidential candidate told RealClearPolitics on Tuesday that she is considering a second White House run.

Bachmann made the revelation during an interview, in which she was asked for her view on whether any Republican women might seek the Oval Office in 2016.

“The only thing that the media has speculated on is that it’s going to be various men that are running,” she replied. “They haven’t speculated, for instance, that I’m going to run. What if I decide to run? And there’s a chance I could run.”

Bachmann entered the last presidential race in June 2011 as a long-shot contender but was able to use her sway with elements of the Tea Party and an effective media campaign to rise temporarily toward the front of the Republican pack in a deeply fluid race.

The high point of her candidacy came in August 2011 when she won the Ames Straw Poll in Iowa.

But Bachmann’s campaign soon withered amid a string of gaffes and controversial claims, staff defections, and a rise in the fortunes of other candidates in the race.

She ended up finishing in sixth place in the Iowa caucuses less than five months after her Ames triumph, earning just 5 percent of the vote and dropping out the next day.

Interesting comments. Just for myself, I thought Bachmann looked rather promising Certainly better than several of the other names we keep getting fed. Remember also that Bachman ( and a couple other candidates) were pretty much targeted by huge leftist money to cripple her last candidacy. I, for one, would welcome hearing more from her I think she may add positively to the GOP nomination discourse. And we’ll see ....

She needs to reconsider.

Michelle Bachman was an outstanding Congresswoman.

She was a second-rate Presidential candidate.

And there's no reason to believe anything has changed...

“Explain to me what policies she stood and fought for makes her stupid beyond reason?”

Stupid isn’t a matter of policies or politics. She is just not sharp, and it was quite apparent from her debate performances and her inability to avoid pitfalls the media laid for her.

How many of her bills passed the house, and how many were signed into law?

It looks like she got a bill passed congratulating Minnesota on its 150th anniversary. So there's that.

The last thing the GOP needs is a side show whereby the media can twist words to cast republicans as boobs.

You're kidding, right? ANY conservative will get this treatment. Just as the sun rises in the East...

“How about Paul Ryan?”

He’s in Boehner’s pocket now, no thanks.

“ANY conservative will get this treatment.”

Yes, but not any conservative will make it as easy for the media as Bachmann does.

“She is stupid beyond reason.”

You are not really a conservative, are you?

That's decidedly unpresidential. Bachmann should retire.

She’s a conservative female with a habit of foot in mouth.

That’s it, as a congresswoman she was a good and dependable vote, but that position is the highest possible role for her, that is her peak office, a congressional seat.

Not sure about that yet. He is fairly unscathed by the media assault.

RE: Bachmann couldn’t grab any power in congress because she is flaky and weak,

Really? when has she compromised on any important principle?

On almost every issue she has been on the RIGHT side of it.

I wouldn’t hold it against her if the powers that be ignore her. She is a more principled person compared to the rest for them to give her any power.

RE: Bachmann is not anywhere close to being presidential material, or even Governor material, and you are wrong to keep comparing President Nixon and President Reagan to her, and calling them retreads.

I will concede that she is nowhere near Reagan in terms of ability.

But between her and Nixon, heck I’d take my chances on her knowing what I know about Nixon.

And she’d be a better President than any of the Democrats out there.

RE: , but that position is the highest possible role for her, that is her peak office, a congressional seat.

The problem is not that she has been tried and found wanting for any higher office, it is that she has not been tried at all.

Read post 54.

She is perfectly fine as a member of congress because she votes well, but that’s it, she is not a big leagues player, and that is why she never made a ripple in congress, all she could do is vote correctly.

RE: all she could do is vote correctly.

Let’s come to an agreement, if as a retread she goes up against the likes of Jeb Bush, Romney ( again ) or Chris Christie or even Rand Paul, I’d take HER over the lot.

If Ted Cruz is in the mix, I’d take Ted Cruz.

Her reliable vote and SOLID stance on issues is a mirror into her principles and we NEED someone with principles.

The problem is not that she has been tried and found wanting for any higher office, it is that she has not been tried at all.

What a desperate thing to say, she has an office, and because of her similarity to Governor and vice-presidential candidate Palin, she got on plenty of national media, and she even got a presidential campaign.
She proved to be incompetent, flaky, and weak in striving to move into higher office, the same reasons she couldn't exploit all that publicity into gaining some power in the congress, she isn't executive material.
