Why Did the State Department Announce a Travel Warning for Israel?
Weekly Standard ^ | 7/22/14 | NOAH POLLAK

Posted on 07/22/2014 10:48:39 AM PDT by Nachum

Yesterday, moments after Secretary of State John Kerry departed for the Middle East to attempt to broker a ceasefire in the Israel-Gaza war, the State Department issued a warning recommending that “U.S. citizens consider the deferral of non-essential travel to Israel” due to the threat from “long-range rockets launched from Gaza.”

Interesting timing.

Long-range rocket fire from Gaza has been dramatically curtailed in recent days by the IDF’s ground operation, and was heaviest at the beginning of the war – some two weeks ago. Despite Hamas and Islamic Jihad barrages of M75 and M302 rockets fired at Tel Aviv and Jerusalem on July 8th, 9th, and 10th, no travel warning was issued.

I think because for two reasons, first they do not want to see what happened to the Maylaisa Airlines plane which was shot down last work over eastern Ukraine happen to an American plane. Second because there is a sense that Israel is going to do something big in regards to riding Gaza of Hamas, once and for all.

Sanctions by any other name are still sanctions. Fortunately many other flights are available from non US airlines.

Maybe fulfilling the Constitutional mandate to protect the citizens?

I’m cynical but not paranoid.

It wouldn’t surprise me if more sanctions follow. Of course, they won’t be called sanctions—just a ban on travel, transfer of money, suspension of trade agreements, no visas to the US for Israelis (already somewhat curtailed), etc.

"there is a sense that Israel is going to do something big in regards to riding Gaza of Hamas, once and for all."

Israel can significantly reduce the presence of Hamas in Gaza in the short term, but in regards to "ridding Gaza of Hamas" it would likely require following the advice Arnaud Amalric gave to troops attacking the Cathar stronghold of Béziers during the Albigensian Crusade.

If a civilian airliner is shot down by a missile fired from Gaza, then the fun will really begin.

Because it’s dangerous.

Who in their right mind (or what rational airline) would willingly fly into a country whose skies are full of warfare?

How much influence does the government have over the FAA?

How much over the airlines (via background subsidies, rulings, etc.)?
