2700 jobs lost at the Fort ... the real story

You may have heard talk recently of Fort Huachuca potentially losing 2,700 jobs. There's a lot of confusion and some misinformation floating around on exactly what that means. I'll try to clear some of that up.

Perhaps most importantly, this isn't just about Fort Huachuca. Rather, the potential loss of 2,700 jobs (actually, 2,739, which includes 1,726 permanent party soldiers and 1,013 Army civilians) is part of the larger Army 2020 Force Structure Realignment. The realignment considers huge force reductions at 30 installations Army-wide between 2015 and 2020.

-—— potentially losing 2,700 jobs. ——

That’s the money phrase.

If the Republicans take the Senate, the budget can be adjusted to provide other cuts negating the DOD sequester.

Ft Knox is going to take a 4,100 hit (in addition to losing the BCT). The local communities invested heavily, both private and government (schools, roads, utilities) to prepare for the inflex from BRAC 2010. Now, Ft Knox is closing 4 on post schools and the local school districts are restructuring to take up the loss in students.

Please dump this. It contains factual error about end-strength numbers that co-mingles the civilian and uniformed headcount. End-strength is all about uniformed headcount, only!

hmph - anyone else notice that there are no projected Pentagon cuts? I can think of a large number of stars we can do without across all services.

Here is the Army’s plan for cutting Headquarters, Department of the Army. This came out in 2013 and is still in effect.

Base personnel (as opposed to soldiers who are assigned there for training or other temporary-basis). Cadre.
