New California law limits schools' full-contact football practice

Sacramento -- Schools in California that have football programs will be forced to limit the number of days and hours young athletes can practice tackling and other full-contact collisions as a way to prevent head injuries, according to a bill signed Monday by Gov. Jerry Brown.

The new law, which goes into effect Jan. 1, restricts full-contact practices to two 90-minute sessions per week during the regular and pre- season, and prohibits tackling during the off-season.

"Football is a great sport, but parents want to know if their kids are going to be safe," said Assemblyman Ken Cooley (D-Rancho Cordova), who sponsored the bill. "This is about protecting kids, as well as parents' peace of mind."

Currently, coaches can hold full-contact practices daily, if they choose.

Football is a violent sport by definition. It is a hitting sport.

The parents who want safety can have their son try ballet or swimming, but the most competitive boys/men will always be drawn to the most competitive sports. I guess that's hard for the wet-noodle crowd to understand.

That's just the way it is. To make football ‘safe’ is to make the game something other than football.

But some coaches said the law, while well intentioned, could lead to even worse injuries among young athletes because the players won't have adequate experience in safe tackling.

Solution to football injuries is... no pads, full-contact fooseball. A young punk player ain’t quite so bold when a hit may do damage to the defender himself.

American Football bores me... Professional football is more like a 3 minute television timeout every 2 minutes.

Rugby, son. Play Rugby.

Yep. Old El Rushbo was right as usual.

1) Discourage the kids from playing the game; you dry up future participants.

2) Introduce cretins like Michael Sam and make the NFL politically-correct and bow down to a tiny minority; you disrupt the current status and alienate viewers, which causes the NFL to lose fans and money.

3) Have retired players sue the snot out of the NFL with head injury claims.

And what people don't realize is that the liberals have targeted football since the days of Teddy Roosevelt. In fact, Roosevelt almost banned the game unless it became more safe.

If you wait long enough they will insist the players wear the pads and helmets 24/7.

Played the game in Kalifornia, albeit 30 years ago. During the off season we never played full on tackle. We just hit the weights and attended 7 v 7 Passing league.

During the Season we did do a lot more contact, live situation work. I think this will effect the quality of the game, but IT IS FOR THE KIDS.

New California law limits schools' full-contact football practice

This isn't true.

They provided provisions in the new laws allowing for full contact if a homosexual perverted sex act is occurring on the field.

I have a friend who has ALS, which I would not wish on anyone including Obama. POSSIBLY partially as a result of playing Div 1 college football.

He does not want to see the game wussified. Period.

I will respect his wishes.

I killed a defensive player in high school football, the pads and protection aren't a total guarantee.
