McCaul raises specter of 'submarine warfare'

House Homeland Security Committee Chairman Michael McCaul (R-Texas) raised the specter of "submarine warfare" from Russia while making comments on the downing of Malaysia Airlines Flight 17.

McCaul, speaking on CNN, said an impending threat from the Kremlin "could involve submarine warfare" as Russian President Vladimir Putin seeks to regain global power. "Mr. Putin is returning to a Cold War mentality," McCaul said. "You said this nationalistic pride [in Russia], a resurgence to regain the glory of the old days … It's not the Al-Qaeda threat, but it's the threat of brute force."

Russia's role in destabilizing eastern Ukraine appeared to culminate last week when Flight 17 went down in territory controlled by separatists with ties to the Kremlin.

Secretary of State John Kerry said Sunday it was "pretty clear" the separatists were responsible with Russian help but he declined to blame the Kremlin for the tragedy.

President Obama has also indirectly tied the crash to Russia.

In contrast, McCaul and Senate Intelligence Committee Chairwoman Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) both squarely blamed Putin on Sunday.

"I think Putin is responsible and complicit for what happened," McCaul said.

Lawmakers' growing candor is likely to put pressure on the Obama administration to give more detail on how it plans to counter Russia's actions in the region.

Don’t worry. We have women and gays on our submarines now. What could possibly go wrong.

Those who ignore the past are doomed to repeat it. This time there are nuclear weapons a-plenty so if someone does something stupid, many will get to pay.

Whose interests does it most serve for the USA to be in conflict with Russia again? I suspect it’s neither Russia nor the USA.

If Putin had any balls he would just roll his army into East Ukraine and take it.

At least there won’t be any sexual tension in the air...

If the free world keeps showing weakness to Putin, then we will be in conflict with Russia, in time.

We’d better not go back to the Cold War against the Soviets and Red China. We are no way prepared to defend against them now. LePunk in the Hood in DC has destroyed our military and financial status. We don’t have the money and he is cutting back to pre-WWII military status. The Reds will more than have us out numbered. The thing is, neither of them worry about the number of dead troops like we do. They lose thousands and don’t care. We lose 100 and the press and Congress lose their minds. We don’t have the leadership now to defend the nation. Either on the Hill, in the White House or in the Pentagon.

Actually if they kept the straight men on base
and just sent the gays and women we would have the
best decorated submarines in the world, and they’d
be clean and fresh smelling too.

I don’t think there’s any evidence that Putin was deliberately responsible. It seems very doubtful to me. I think this guys is just talking off the top of his head.

Agree - At this point talking about war with Russia is beyond idiotic.

“I don’t think there’s any evidence that Putin was deliberately responsible.”

‘Ras’Putin is deliberately responsible for the cover-up at the crash sight! He is evil, whether he ordered it shot down or not!

I do believe that a Russian ‘military advisor’ in that part of the Ukraine was directly responsible for downing that airliner. I also believe that Putin was directly responsible for that mobile rocket launcher and rockets to be there in the hands of the Ukraine opposition (they are actually Russians posing as ‘opposition’ in my opinion).

No question that Putin took advantage of the turmoil in the Ukraine (started by Ukrainian activists funded by Soros) to grab Crimea. Crimea used to be Russian until it was given to Ukraine at a time with Russia was too weak to object, and it’s their only direct access to southern waters). But I don’t see any reason whatever why Putin would have engineered shooting down this plane.

Putin is a victim of the shortage of good little militants that obey orders and call first before blowing things out not the sky.

OH vell.

I agree that Putin likely did not order THAT plane shot down. I stand by everything I said in my post to you.

>>At least there won’t be any sexual tension in the air...

That would be true except they still need straight men to keep the ship running, and kill spiders.
