The year was 1969. The turbulent time in America saw troops fighting in Vietnam, and a nation dealing with the assassinations of President John F. Kennedy, killed in 1963, and Robert Kennedy and Martin Luther King Jr., both murdered in 1968.

Then came that one small step.

Forty-five years ago today, 500 million people around the world witnessed American astronauts Neil Armstrong, Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin and Michael Collins as they embarked on the Apollo 11 mission to the moon.

Apollo 11 landed on the moon on July 20, 1969, and six hours later Armstrong was the first man to step on the moon's surface, delivering those iconic words: "One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind."

I remember the blurry images, black and white..

Middle of the night..

Houston..

The Eagle has landed.

I was almost 15.

Oh what a night.

A triumph any way ya cut it.

For mankind. Not just for some.

They just don’t write classics like that anymore.

I saw it too, it was fantastic! Wasn’t there another crew that also landed on the moon or was this the only 3?

My dream home would have a room with nothing but Alan Bean originals.

Thanks for the link!

I’ll always remember watching that first step on TV in the living room with my Father & Uncle – both were World War II veterans less than 25 years removed, and there was a special pride in America and the accomplishments of Armstrong, et al that day…

They left for the moon on hubby’s birthday, landed on my mom’s birthday and landed back on earth on my son’s second birthday...which reminds me...I must get a Birthday card tomorrow.

In my mind Chappaquiddick and the moon landing go hand in hand. In one a democrat went under the water and in the other a nation went to the moon!

Only two people on the landing crews. Total of twelve.

Six landings:

11, 12, 14, 15, 16 & 17.

I think I read somewhere that he did say “a man.” Communications blinked for a split second and the word “a” didn’t come through.

The Mouse Trap, for some who may not know, was THE watering hole in Cocoa Beach for the NASA crowd in the 1950s thru much of the eighties, as I recall, until it closed down.

And don't forget the Pillow Talk Lounge!
