U.S. officials warned on Sunday that scammers are attempting to prey on the families of some of the tens of thousands of unaccompanied child immigrants crossing the border from Latin America, seeking money for phony travel costs.

"One fraud scheme involved individuals who claimed to be representing a charitable or non profit organization, which they claimed assists in processing and reuniting the children with their families," said Special Agent Michelle Lee.

Another scheme used what Lee described as "caller I.D. spoofing" to make it appear that the calls were coming from a San Antonio business, which she didn't name, in an attempt to lend credibility to the scheme.

Lee said the callers requested payments from the families of the young immigrants ranging from $300 to several thousand dollars, claiming the money was for travel expenses.

Welcome to America!

Wait until the illegals get their Obamaphones and they start getting cold calls for “air duct cleaning” and “house painting” services.

Those engaged in fraud against our country are (reportedly) being targeted by fraud? I’m okay with that.

“Never let a crisis go to waste.”

And it looks like a few are making some real returns on their investments of time and effort in taking advantage of the chaos stirred up.

Isn’t there something like, human trafficking going on here? Is that even legal?

Opportunity is knocking. (Oh, criminy, do I HAVE to include the < /sarc > tag?)

Glad someone knows what I was meaning to say—I just reread my post that you responded to and saw I said “heard” instead of “hard”—when you get old you get slippy, I mean sloppy on the key board. :)

But to get back to the subject, I really doubt that scammers are interested in taking illegals for a ride or can even get any info about them or their families.
