...his wife Lois — who he wed in 1956 just two weeks after they met...

That's impressive...

“This is Jim Rockford, at the tone leave your name and message. I’ll get back to you.”

Just imagine how many answering machines that sold at the time.

You are kidding me. He was a decent actor, but he was an extrememe liberal (in the modern sense of the word). Not that it isn’t sad when some liberals die, but it is surprising for folks on this site to feel so bad.

Oh, that’s too bad. I still watch the Rockford Files occasionally on Netflix streaming, great show. So dying at 86 means that he was on that show from age 46 to 52. He looked damn good for 50-ish years old.

Right on, I remember Tank. Movie was a little bit silly, but any problems with that movie were not the fault of James Garner, he was great!

Half of me is chuckling with you in total agreement at least on the phenomenon of favorite stars one puts on pedestals, and then when mud gets on their feet one feels inclined to chuck out the whole sculpture forevermore -- !! You don't even want to know the ugly on some of conservatives' favorite stars. Ignorance is bliss. The ONE star who has stood up amazingly for me is Powers Booth. THAT is a righteous man, a very rightly moral guy.

But speaking of Garner and other favorites who are liberals (Harrison Ford, Paul Newman) --

I used to like his work, but after hearing him off script could not watch him. He was a very stupid man. Rest in peace.

Yes, he was stupid in some ways, but aren't we all? He was courageous and did "good" with his life, even to being married to the same sweetheart for 58 years. What more should one ask of a guy who at the same time, in his job (acting), delivered so well, so many enjoyable, entertaining moments?

Thanks, God, for the loan James Garner.

James Scott Bumgarner was the best!

The fact he was a life long dem, is easily offset with the knowing that “in his day” dems were equally patriotic, although wrong on politics, and were not the same as the America hating socialist progressive dems who are for America’s destruction today.

Good point.

Ditto on the “wow.” Garner and his wife dated only two weeks before marrying for a lifetime.

They both were Democrats, but no one is perfect.

RIP, James Garner.

Interesting. He fought in the Korean war and was wounded twice and awarded two purple hearts.

MrD and I married in 1957 after knowing each other for 2 months, we are still happily married. That’s pretty much the same. I am very proud of our marriage because it is becoming more and more rare.
