Armed Russian rebels fire warning shots at international inspectors at crash site ...

Russian rebels have stopped inspectors from investigating the MH17 crash site amid reports the black box record is 'on its way to Moscow'.

Monitors from the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) were prevented from conducting their investigation by militiamen during their first trip to the scene.

The separatists reportedly fired warning shots as the group of 30 officials approached, forcing them to leave after just 75 minutes.

The stand-off fuelled speculation that rebels are beginning a 'cover-up' by hiding all links to the Buk missile believed to have shot down the plane.

Michael Bociurkiw, spokesman for the OSCE, told CNN: 'It basically looks like the biggest crime scene in the world right now, guarded by a bunch of guys in uniform with heavy firepower who are quite inhospitable, 'And there didn't seem to be anyone really in control ...

Pro-Russian separatist rebels who control the area said they had recovered ‘eight out of 12’ of the black boxes, and were considering what to do with them.

Since planes usually have two black boxes — one for recording flight data and the other for recording cockpit voices — it was not clear what the rebel was referring to.

Meanwhile Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said the Kremlin had no intention of getting hold of the boxes, which he said should be given to the relevant international organisations.

But then insurgent leader Aleksandr Borodai contradicted his colleague by claiming the rebels did not have any of the boxes anyway.

And to complete the confusion, Kostyantyn Batozsky, an adviser to the Donetsk regional governor, said at a news conference the flight recordings had been handed over to Ukrainian officials....

“8 of 12 boxes” sounds like they found the radio and computer racks in the EE bay, not the voice or data recorders.

“Monitors from the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) were prevented from conducting their investigation by militiamen during their first trip to the scene. “

The organization itself has sent out an official tweet response saying that this story is fraudulent, that they were not shot at during their visit.

“In response to media reports our monitors were not shot at while visiting #MH17 crash site today. “

When the headline and subject is Russian guerrillas who control the crash site, firing on inspectors to drive them away, do they really need to point out that the enemy fighters are “armed rebels”?

There must be a mistake, western media wouldn't lie about something like this...why would they?

I thought the point of warning shots were that they were not directed at the targets, who will understand that the next shots may be aimed at them.

I don’t see how it matters who gets the black boxes. It will indicate the plane was suddenly shot down. We know that. If they can identify exact weapon used (may already know that) and a way to tie it to a specific group then that would be useful.

The tweet I saw didn't show the OSCE describing the story as "fraudulent".

The story claimed that there were warning shots fired.

The OSCE claim is that they were "not shot at".

The two statements don't contradict each other.

Do you know the difference between firing a shot directly at somebody and firing a warning shot?

If your interpretation was correct, the organization would not have sent out a responding corrective tweet.

Dude. Here is the OSCE twitter feed. Link

The OSCE didn't identify any story as "fraudulent".

Look at the feed for yourself. To claim that they did is fraudulent.

The twitter feed said that they were "not shot at".

Every story I've seen has said that there were warning shots fired. The stories didn't say that the OSCE was fired at. If you know of such a false story then by all means link to it.

Else you have nothing.

If warning shots were fired, would you agree that would create a highly tense situation?

If warning shots were fired, would you agree that would put investigators in fear of their security?

That is the false impression these articles create, directly refuted by the OSCE itself.

“The monitors were given access to the site for 75 minutes, and while they were at the heavily guarded site, rebels fired their weapons into the air, Sharma (OSCE spokesman) said.

“The shots were not targeting the monitors as such; they were just into the air. It was not a particularly tense situation in which monitors were concerned about their security,” he said.

The master at PsyOps (Psychological Operations) was Goebbels. He did say over and over again: “If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it.” He would also say that “the lie can be maintained only for such time as the State can shield the people from the political, economic and/or military consequences of the lie. It thus becomes vitally important for the State to use all of its powers to repress dissent, for the truth is the mortal enemy of the lie, and thus by extension, the truth is the greatest enemy of the State.”

The black box records stresses on the skin of the airplane. As well it has the contents of the cockpit audio recordings. The data in the black box will allow them to model what happened to the plane, basically it will allow them to prove it was hit with a missile. The cockpit audio recorder will also have the explosion on audio and be confirmation of the computer modeling. That is all necessary for firmly and legally laying blame and describing the cause of “the crash.”

This is why the Russians won’t want them to have it. The Russians probably don’t think they are fooling anyone except for idiots, and their own people (mostly idiots too). Putin primarily is concerned about keeping his support levels high.

Right now the two popular theories going around on Russian social media are:

1. the plane was blown up by a Ukrainian missile because they mistook the Malaysian flag for the Russian flag and thought it was Putin flying over Ukraine

And... this is hilarious:

2. MH17 is the missing Malaysian jet that was never found. It was hijacked, all the people were killed and the bodies were kept in cold storage. Now, it was secretly flown from Amsterdam filled with dead bodies and Ukrainian pilots. The pilots detonated the plane over south eastern Ukraine and escaped via parachute.

I am not making that up. People are believing this stuff over there.

Anyway I lurk but thought I would answer the question about why possession of the black box is important.

By the time they grant full access to the site, all the bodies on the ground are going to be rotted (they have made no attempt to recover the bodies yet, they are just flagging them), and the locals have been going through the site and picking up passports... which means what they are probably doing is picking up wallets and rolexes and anything else they can get their hands on. Just taking pictures of the passports. The whole thing is disgusting.

A lot of Russians are currently traveling across Europe and the world. They all support Putin - he is immensely popular with the rabble of Russia.

They should also not feel so secure now when they travel since they have all rooted for, and supported the butcher of innocent European travelers.

I suppose “Armed Russian Rebels” firing shots makes more sense than “Unarmed Russian Rebels” firing shots, but for the sake of accuracy, wouldn’t it be pro-Russian Ukrainian rebels who would be firing the shots? (Not that 3/4 of US journalists could even pick out the Ukraine on a globe.)
