How to fix California? Make six of them, says billionaire Tim Draper
The Guardian ^ | July 18 2014 | Andrew Gumbel

Tim Draper loves California so much he’d like to see six of them.

The Silicon Valley venture capitalist, best known for backing such companies as Hotmail and Skype in the early days of the internet boom, believes government in his home state is so broken down that the only way to fix it is to break it up – like taking an axe to a creaking corporation with too many unprofitable divisions and too much bureaucracy choking its potential.

And so he dreams of Silicon Valley, his home turf, getting the chance to run itself; Los Angeles becoming its own smog-choked fiefdom that can create whatever tax incentives it wants to stop film and television production leaving town; San Diego and the long desert border dealing with the immigration crisis by itself; and the sparsely populated areas in the east and north of the state getting some autonomy – not to mention the right to send two senators each to Washington.

It’s the sort of idea one might hear floated over a dinner table or in a spirited debate in a bar. Since Draper is a billionaire, though, he has paid professional signature-gatherers to muster popular support for his dream of splitting California into six and seems likely to get his proposal on the ballot in 2016. He claims to have gathered a staggering 1.3 million signatures – more than 7% of California’s vote-eligible population – of which he formally delivered just a small initial consignment earlier this week.

The reaction, at least so far, has run from bemused to outraged. Nobody – except perhaps Draper himself – thinks the measure stands the slightest chance of passing. (California voters are a lot more indulgent about putting measures on the ballot than they are about approving them.) But that hasn’t stopped

As a resident of the state, I would actually support this.

However considering how things go out here, if I support it, that means it will be voted down.

Just saying.

This could be a political boon for Democrats.

Why? Because instead of 2 senators from California, there would be 12 senators from what is now California.

Currently both senators are Democrat. But in adding new states, adding 10 more senators, it’s likely that 6 or 7 of these new senators would be Democrats.

Start with two, Dork. NorCal and SoCal.

Traditionally, some areas of SoCal like Orange Country and San Diego, have traditionally been more Christian influenced and right leaning.

Funny, I have exactly the same problem. Almost a perfect negative correlation between what I vote for and what gets passed.

Indeed. However, I would be open to an idea like this IF there was a one-for-one tradeoff via consolidating some of the Eastern states. I would like to see MA-VT-NH-CT-RI be made one state. I would also like to see DE and MD combine.

That gets rid of 5 states and allows for 5 new ones.

I could live with that.

The other states will never consent to creating 10 new senators without some sort of Missouri compromise offset. Break up Texas?

so the Liberal wackos in Silicon Valley and San Fran and LA flood us with immigrants and then want to leave San Diego to deal with the immigrant problem alone? Fine, we’ll be happy to bus them to The Presidio. Get ready.

Splitting liberal states is actually a good way to nullify the urban areas and their undue influence.

This idea has been floated for decades and nothing ever comes of it (not the “6” thing, but definitely splitting that state up).

And the moocher class would cross the new borders to mooch from the producers.

Just like now.

What a great idea this is!

It would give us five more Barbara Boxers and five more Dianne Feinsteins in the U.S. Senate, and we desperately need that. /S

“Break up Texas?”

Texas would secede before they’d split.

Which then means three to four would be Republican and California's 55 EV's would now be 44-11 (0r so).

I will take that over the alternative.
