Witness: Ventura Said SEALs Deserved To Lose Men In Iraq
WCCO.com ^ | 7/16/14 | Pat Kessler

Defense lawyers in the Jesse Ventura defamation case rolled out a parade of witnesses Wednesday claiming Ventura got punched out in a California bar.

That’s the claim in the best-selling war memoir “American Sniper” by the deceased author Chris Kyle. It’s about to be made into a movie.

But the bar fight is a claim Ventura says never happened.

For the last two days, Navy SEALs have claimed in court that they saw one part or another of the bar fight. Ventura, described in the book as “scruff face,” is accused of shooting off his mouth about the war and Navy SEALs, and getting punched out.

On Wednesday, one SEAL said he saw it all. Jeremiah Dinnell told the 10-person jury he witnessed the scuffle between Ventura and Kyle.

Dinnell said Ventura was loudly criticizing the war in Iraq to active duty Navy SEALs, who were attending a funeral wake.

According to Dinnell, Ventura told the SEALs: “You guys deserve to lose some guys over there.”

Dinnell said Ventura was in an “aggressive stance” when Kyle hit him.

But Ventura’s lawyers say Dinnell’s story has changed since Ventura filed the lawsuit two years ago. They say Dinnell changed his story so that it more closely resembles the account in Kyle’s book.

However, when he was questioned by lawyers, Dinnell said he remembered Ventura’s exact words.

Dinnell, like Kyle, was also a sniper in Iraq and Afghanistan. In court, he said he had 47 confirmed kills.

Will be interested to see how this plays out.

There is a legal truism that does apply, words never justify an assault.

My office prosecuted any number of A&Bs that were the result of someone being hit for what they said.

The court case has nothing to do with assault and battery. Ventura is claiming he was never hit.

“words never justify an assault.”

True.

But, that’s not what is on trial, here.

Kyle says it happened.

Jesse says it didn’t.

Them’s fightin’ words.

But the suit isn’t about that. Ventura says Kyle never hit him and the book makes him out to be a wuss. He says that cost him money. I guess all that fake “wrasslin” added to his macho reputation.

I have often wondered what makes these elite warriors tick. It seems obvious that they differ in a lot of ways but there must be some things they all have in common.

The common wisdom in ancient Greece was that the Spartans were not that much better in individual combat but as a unit they were literally unbeatable. The Persian’s 10,000 Immortals were also elite but they really didn’t fare any better than the regular troops when opposing the Spartans.

Different situations call for different skills. If I were in a house surrounded by a dozen German soldiers I would love to have Audie Murphy and Sergeant York with me. If I were trapped in an underwater cave with only an hour’s supply of oxygen, it would probably be nice to have Swede Momson there.

Despite the TV shows trying to prove it, there is just no way to know which warriors were the best ever. My guess might be Alexander’s battle hardened Macedonians and Greeks. Maybe the Japanese Samurai.

Just how good was Ventura? I suspect he wasn’t but he must have had something to go through the physical and mental trials he did as a Navy Seal.

And sometime after that, the wheels came off.

“There is a legal truism that does apply, words never justify an assault.”

Well, we need to write a new legal truism stating that it is legal, moral and justified to cold cock Ventura any time and anywhere that a Navy Seal feels like it. And, a $1,000 bonus to the seal should he kick Ventura in the cajoles while he’s at it. There, fixed your truism :)

That is probably what happened. I saw recently where a former Seal became a transvestite or something like that. How in the world could that happen?

I remember the German general Heinrici thought it took at least a year of combat to produce a useful soldier. How would a thousand battle scarred veterans do against a thousand Rangers who had never been in battle?

Do you know for a fact that Ventura was actually a seal? I’ve never seen anyone state that he was - except himself....

Ventura was never a Navy SEAL. He was UDT. If he said the things about, ‘you guys deserved ( whatever )’ then it seems to me that it was inter-unit rivalry that sparked the words.

I don’t think he could have gone through a political campaign without being caught if he really wasn’t.

Ah but this is a CIVIL suit and not a criminal incident. Ventura decided to sue Kyle’s estate because the a$%wipe didn’t like that Kyle said he smacked the old Jester down. Hurt V’s ego and pride so he has sued. Now he is getting what is his due

And most interesting is that the conspirator in chief cowardly waited until after Kyle was dead before filing this suit. He is beneath contempt

Nonsense. No one took him seriously and thought he would lose so no one bothered to check anything he said. As I recall it was a three way race and Ventura managed to get enough votes from disgruntled voters to win
