A North Texas community that sits on a large natural gas reserve could become the first city in the state to partially ban hydraulic fracturing, with city leaders in Denton set to vote early Wednesday on a citizen-led petition to outlaw new permits for the drilling method.
The process, also called fracking, has led to significant economic benefits but also to fears that the chemicals could spread to water supplies, worsen air quality and even cause small earthquakes.
Scores of other cities and some states have considered similar bans, but the proposal in Denton is a litmus test on whether any community in Texas—the nation’s biggest oil and gas producer—can rebuff the industry and still thrive. Industry groups and state regulators warn that such a ban could be followed by litigation from mineral rights’ owners and could have economic implications for the state and even globally. …

Has fracking EVER caused any of these problems? I had heard it hasn’t.
All the people of Denton need to do is look to their south to understand their choices. In Dallas that has chosen to restrict drilling and fracking the city is broke and getting more so while putting more tax pressure on the producers. Over in Fort Worth where they have embraced drilling and fracking the city is flush with money and is vitalizing itself with infrastructure improvements and new construction. FW’s downtown is alive with lots of people living and working there while Dallas’s downtown is a ghost town after dark.
I live about 30 miles south of downtown Denton. Chesapeake has been pumping gas via the fracking method from under my house for about 3 years. The only consequence I have observed from this activity is the fact that I draw a royalty check from them every month! Go FRACKING!

Denton is home to UNT. Most liberal idiot college in North Texas. The pothead liberals are too stoned to think outside the script of professor dictated idiocy.
Thier Democratic party is as liberal as they come from what I see.

My father was a contrary responder. It’s a psychological condition. If I said it was white he’d snap it was black. It didn’t matter that I could produce a color wheel and hold it up to the object in question. This is a common condition. Unfortunately some of these people are OCD political activists. But judges and politicians get to make decisions. We can’t count on them to make good decisions. From what I see they mostly just flip a coin. So, regardless of merit or reality they will make a decision.
Not sure about Texas law, but in Morgantown, WV (home of WVU) they tried this also. It failed miserably, the gas industry is large driver of growth for the region.
This is Texas, we take care of ROGUE city councils, and WE WILL pass a law pre-empting this garbage.
The left will learn that they’re wasting their time here and would be much better off trying this stunt in New York or California.
Tis was started by people in a subdivision who were bothered by drilling next to the subdivision, and were not getting any royalties - didn’t own the rights. Picked up by a bunch of college professors and students (50,000 students at 2 universities). The city panel overseeing drilling activities in the city is headed by a sociology professor.
This foolishness is part of why we have moved out of Denton.
Assuming that Dan Patrick and the other Republicans do well in November, I don’t think that college professors will get very far pulling these stunts. This crap is not tolerated by Texans and we typically elect people that don’t put up with it either.
Denton, Texas is a case study in what happens to a Southern town that gets filled up with transplanted Northerners.

Your problem is in your product. If oil, volatile liquids, or natural gas are believed to be plentiful under your property, I’m sure the drillers will be knocking on your door.Heck, on the other hand, isn’t valuable, and drillers can get all they want of that for free, without bothering to drill.

News on the radio today was the council voted NO on the frac ban.
Word to the wise: don’t send your kids and money to UNT or any other liberal university.
