SIERRA VISTA — More thunderstorm activity which could release heavy amounts of rain is predicted to continue, according to a federal meteorologist..

Friday’s storm created the need to call out additional Sierra Vista Police officers, because of the need to establish traffic control at intersections where traffic lights went out, said Officer Jock Russell.

Additionally, there was a criminal incident being investigated which involved the transportation of marijuana during the storm, he said Saturday.

“We were slammed, we had to call in extra officers,” Russell said.

On Saturday, calls were still coming in of damage to include trees down, power lines exposed, a telephone pole leaning toward a house and other issues, he said.

Fort Huachuca spokeswoman Tanja Linton said on Saturday, “The Main Gate closed around 8:30 p.m. (Friday), due to flooding near the Shopper/Gas Station. Traffic was routed to the East Gate. The Main Gate reopened at approximately 12:15 a.m. (Saturday).”

She had no other report of storm damage on the post.

Saturday some storm debris, mainly rocks of various sizes, were noted on streets such as Wilcox Drive and Buffalo Soldier Trail.

Ken Drozd, a National Weather Service meteorologist in Tucson, said, “It’s going to be a pretty active pattern for the next few days.”

The storms could lead to “possible serious flooding,” he told the Herald/Review on Saturday, adding conditions for such activities, “are favorable.”

According to the water gauge reading in the area of Charleston Bridge late Friday evening 2,000 cubic feet per second (cfs) of flow was measured. A cfs equates to 7.2 gallons of water rushing by a gauge, meaning at one time the river’s flow was 14,400 gallons of water passing by the gauge each second.

Drozd said most of the storms are coming from the east during this time of the year, which are part of the normal monsoonal flow.

The storm triggers “are from the east,” although some could be set off by weather actions to the north, the meteorologist said.

Although downpours can be heavy in some areas, such as parts of Sierra Vista experienced on Thursday and Friday, occasionally the storm pattern will weaken and become more erratic, Drozd said.

According to spotters in the Sierra Vista area, Friday’s storm dropped different amounts, with one reporting “2.49 inches and another three quarters of an inch of rain,” he said.

Well three times in my area today, (Western Pa) they called for violent T-Storms.....so far nothing but cloudiness and occasional uptick in winds. No rain at all.

Did the monsoon come early this year?

Used to be that AUG was the month everyone hated for the bad storms and high humidity.

True for the Phoenix area. Down here on the border, you can almost set your watch calendar by the start of the Monsoon; 9 times out of 10 the 4th of July fireworks are all wet.
