Gun violence is a crisis in public health
Milwaukee J-S ^ | 12 july 2014 | Eugene Kane

Posted on 07/12/2014 4:17:41 AM PDT by rellimpank

When a major American city such as Chicago reports 82 people shot and 14 killed over a violent holiday weekend, it's time to take notice.

Describing some parts of the inner city as "the Wild, Wild West" or "an urban war zone" to make a point about lawlessness just doesn't cut it anymore. It's time to call it what it is: an epidemic of gun violence as deadly as any infectious disease or plague that any health professional can imagine.

When Mallory O'Brien, executive director of the Milwaukee Homicide Review Commission, looks at the levels of gun violence in cities such as Chicago, she sees similarities with Milwaukee in terms of the demographics and the social environments where many of the shootings are located.

According to O'Brien, Milwaukee should consider itself fortunate for having "only" nine shootings and one fatality over the Fourth of July weekend, compared to Chicago's bloody totals. But that didn't alleviate her concerns about the possibility for outbreaks of violence on a grand scale in some communities.

"Anytime you hear about that many shootings, it's shocking," O'Brien said. "It's alarming. That's why we have the public health approach."

The homicide commission collects information and research of detailed incidents involving homicide and non-fatal shootings and other crimes on an individual basis. Even though many media reports tended to fold all incidents of gun violence in Chicago's holiday weekend into one large story of societal dysfunction, that tactic often obscured the various factors involved in such widespread mayhem.

Sounds to me like problem with the public not following the law.

To me, it’s the same as the CDC calling guns a medical problem. They go out of their way to decry and demean owner ship of guns and the behavior of people associated with gun ownership, but they do and say nothing about the behavior of homosexuals and any corresponding problem with HIV/AIDS transmission.

Gun violence means nothing to socialists. It’s merely a propaganda tool to them.

Kane’s article clearly indicates that gun violence is strongly correlated to certain types of people.

I disagree - it means everything to them because it's an illogical construct on its face. Attributing an action, violence, to an inanimate object, gun, is ridiculous and deserves to be called out every time they use the term. It means everything to them because then they don't have to deal with the icky part of the problem, people, specifically, their people, their voting bloc, their desired demographic for maintaining political power.

I’m trained in public health and I’m an expert in vector identification.

The problem here, the obvious problem, is the shooters. It’s not the guns.

If it were the guns, there would be 84 shootings in every small town in America every week.

“When Mallory O’Brien, executive director of the Milwaukee Homicide Review Commission, looks at the levels of gun violence in cities such as Chicago, she sees similarities with Milwaukee in terms of the demographics and the social environments where many of the shootings are located.”

So eliminate these “Social Environments”.

Well, the deterioration of the CDC over the past 40 years is heartbreaking, but there is a germ of an idea in the above quote.

It's not the behavior of gun owners that's a problem of course, but behavioral epidemiology of the Chicago shooters would be a very fruitful topic of investigation.

They won't do it, of course, but the toll of "gun violence" IS, at the root, a behavioral problem that has demographic and other characteristics that can be studied.

Yes, it would be useful, but perhaps not through the CDC. And, I guess I should have couched my statement with the proviso that “gun ownership.....” be “legal gun ownership..”

Yeah I would think gangbangers pose a public health risk but they do not want to offend them so they fall under a label a crisis in public health

Let’s start calling this what it is.
It is NOT “gun violence”.

It is “urban cultural violence”.

So, if you want to do something about the violence, do something about the cause.

but perhaps not through the CDC

There is no more chance of the CDC doing behavioral epidemiology on this subject than there is of NASA flying, well, anywhere ever again.

The decline and fall of CDC and NASA have occurred over almost exactly the same time span, and for almost exactly the same reasons.

Each organization still has small redoubts of technical and intellectual superiority, that persist because the vandals are too stupid to recognize and destroy them.

But as far as the big picture, it will take a revolution to restore what has been lost.

The violence is pretty much quarantined to the areas of the feral revolution. So long as it is contained, why is it a public health problem?

It’s like queers and aids.

I own guns because socialists are mass murderers, and I will protect myself and mine against the socialists’ designs on us.

Scientific survey conducted by me a minute and a half ago.

82 shootings, 14 dead.

% white on white? 1%
% white on black?
% black on white? 1%
% black on black? 95%
% other (Latino, Asian, African, middle eastern, European) 3%

Since the actual statistics haven’t been published yet( probably because it doesn’t fit the narrative, I fathomed a guess using empirical data)

Now to the percentage of guns legally bought by the shooter from a respected gun dealer.

White - 95%
Black - 3%
Other - 2%

Finally, shooters who have been incarcerated before for other violets crimes.

White - 8%
Black 87%
Other 5%

Conclusion. Majority of blacks who have previously been incarcerated are the mostl likely to own an illegal gun and use it to murder other blacks, who have also been incarcerated and own an illegal gun.

How to fix? Death penalty for murder, life in prison for committing a crime with an gun, mandatory 10 years if caught with an illegal gun.

Governments fix. Make owning a gun illegal to the 95% of whites who legally own guns and commit less than 3% of the crimes with a gun.

Of course it does but it just does not fit your agenda. To claim that the problem is “gun” violence in a City that has the toughest gun laws in the Nation validates that you are working from a particular agenda. If more people outside of the inner city of Chicago have guns then those inside the city then if guns are the problem there should be more killings outside of the city then inside the city. Since that is not being reported it is easy to assume that there isn’t. It is not “gun” violence that problem it is the problem, it is people violence.

The only problem is that the definition of "illegal gun" keeps changing.
