Rick Perry declines Obama offer for ‘quick handshake’ at Austin airport

Gov. Rick Perry Monday turned down what he characterized as President Barack Obama’s offer for a “quick handshake on the tarmac” at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport on Wednesday, but said he would juggle his schedule to accommodate a “substantive meeting” with the president on the border crisis any time during his two-day visit to Texas.

In a letter to the president, Perry wrote, “I appreciate the offer to greet you at Austin-Bergstrom Airport, but a quick handshake on the tarmac will not allow for a thoughtful discussion regarding the humanitarian and national security crises enveloping the Rio Grande Valley in South Texas. I would instead offer to meet with you at any time during your visit to Texas for a substantive meeting to discuss this critical issue. With the appropriate notice, I am willing to change my schedule to facilitate this request.”

“At any point while you are here, I am available to sit down privately so we can talk and you may directly gain my state’s perspective on the effects of an unsecured border and what is necessary to make it secure,” Perry wrote the president.

Jeez yer foolish, you would raise cain if we posted NG in your state.
You ever heard of Posse comitatis?

We had NG posted here under GWB but they had to be un armed to stay within constitu5tional law.

Hell I don’t write the laws.

Half the folks on FR think I should set up a machinegun nest and mine the border soes they can sleep quiete at night with their kiddies.
And you all want Tx to pay for the whole thing.

You risk your neck!

NAFTA was signed by Clinton. He could have stopped it and he did not.

It’s a treaty and we can abandon it.

For the record, I didn’t care for what Ronald Regan did when it came to amnesty.

Perry set forth conditions and staked out a position. The Dear Leader countered with some weak b.s. that Perry should have dismissed out of hand from a clear position of strength but, instead, he rolled over.

This is a “crisis” of the rat party and the Dear Leader in particular. They are the ones driving it and exacerbating its effects. This ridiculous $4.3 billion dollar request is merely taking advantage of the manufactured “crisis” to send some more dollars to their cronies. Any chaos or pain caused by this is what they were hoping for. Never let a crisis go to waste...

Perry had right on his side, the position to make a stand against an enemy that would not bear any effective criticism, and all it would take was a little bit of fortitude. Instead, he caved within 48 hours. The evening news had nothing but Perry looking like a good servant boy getting back slapped by the Dear Leader. Any legitimacy his position had has been shredded. Utterly pathetic.

Were one to draw a football analogy, this was a butt-fumble by Perry. A complete and total capitulation and rout.

If you think Rick Perry is Presidential materiel, you need to seriously re-think matters...

I said yesterday that Governor Perry should have kept his mouth shut and gone down to the border with lots of reporters and said he was waiting for Obama to show up. Unfortunately he talked too much and the President pulled a rope a dope on him and Perry became a bully pulpit enabler and looks small and unimportant. Makes me sick!

I had hoped that Perry wouldn't cave. He should have stood firm, not shake bozo's hand. Jan Brewer had more guts to wag her finger in bozo's face when they met.

QUESTION: what would be the best move to discourage or counter a move when someone, like obozo, for instance, takes a alpha stance & places his hand on your shoulder?

Perry will be Hannity tonight. I think Perry will not pull any punches.

In this particular instance, Perry should have stayed in the Valley, preferably near one of the Border Checkpoint Stations on both 77 and 281. The ranches near both of these Stations are littered with the debris left by the swarm of illegals streaming across the Border to the South. Simply displaying the ruin and chaos in the Border Counties would have illustrated to a dumbed-down populace the scope of the issue. A further Press Conference could have been held with Perry flanked by an empty chair. This would have been the sort of mockery that the thin-skinned Dear Leader could not tolerate.

But, alas, Rick Perry rolled over and showed us his belly.

Agreed, Perry was weak where he could have been strong. When I heard him last night on Hannity, he didn't sound like a man of strength & courage. He coyly hinted to the real reason for obozo’s moves, but didn't explain further. It was again another opportunity and he flubbed it.

Your idea is a very good one...too bad someone like you with excellent PR skills doesn't work for Perry.

Heh! PR skillz I am certainly not blessed with...

I believe that a lot of the problem is rooted in trying to deal with issues like this through the lens of PR methodology. PR tells us not to be confrontational. PR tells us not to anger anyone. PR tells us... You get the idea.

The thing is, PR is not well suited to combat. We are in a knife fight and the PR flacks think they can use a cleverly worded statement and a nice suit instead of a bigger and very much sharper knife. Or gun. Or MIRV. It is literally category error to these people.
