Former U.S. Sen. Bob Smith topped former state Sen. Jim Rubens in a straw poll of Republican candidates seeking to unseat Democrat Jeanne Shaheen as U.S. senator.

The poll was taken Saturday at the annual picnic of the Coalition of New Hampshire Taxpayers held at the American Legion Hall 59 in Hillsborough.

Scott Brown, the former U.S. senator from Massachusetts known for his more moderate stance, came in third. He did not attend the event.

Brown, Rubens and Smith are vying for the party's nomination in the Sept. 9 primary. The straw poll results were provided by Brian Tilton, spokesman for the Rubens campaign. He did not know the exact tallies. Several attempts to reach Edward Naile of the Coalition, other event organizers and several candidates were unsuccessful. The gathering drew an estimated 150 people - including Republican candidates for governor, both congressional districts, Executive Council and the state Legislature."People are pretty energized. People are very concerned with what's going on with our state's economy and our national economy,"

Tilton said. Also discussed were concerns about "government overreach" and infringement on the consitutional and the right to bear arms, he said. A Ruger Takedown Rifle and Ruger .380 LCP pistol were raffled off at the event."People are looking for candidates they can support - people who match their views on issues they care about," Tilton said.Rubens discussed his concerns about deficit spending and growth in the federal government since the Sept. 11 terrorist attack, Tilton said.

Don't know if this means anything at all, but if New Hampshire republicans want to elect a former senator, better to have Smith than Brown!

Back in the day Bob was a pretty good guy, not perfect but pretty good. His ‘infraction’ was losing a primary and running as an independent. That was the end of him until now I see. Unless he’s changed radically he’d be worlds better than the ma$$hole border hopper Scott Brown...who isn’t a moderate. He’s a MA liberal pretending to be something else. Why he thought coming to NH was a good thing is puzzling. Clearly he’s well out of touch w/ the electorate here.

I remember Bob Smith as pretty solid and somewhat entertaining as a Senator (kind of Jim Traficant-ish) back in the day. He seemed to go a little nutty around the time he got primaried. He would be immensely better than Brown or Shaheen.

Ya, my contact with Bob was very positive. I dont recall him being too nutty but also dont clearly know why he got primaried. Ya, Brown and Shaheen arent whats wanted. Brown should have stayed put...he’ll NEVER be welcome in NH.

I take it you’re from New Hampshire. I’m from MA. Yeah, Bob Smith went off the deep end for a while. I’m glad Brown is the hell out of MA but I’m sorry you guys in NH have to deal with him. He’s an insidious snake.

I went to one of Bob's town hall meetings when I lived in NH and was pretty disgusted with the way he kept projecting what he would do in his 3rd, 4th, 5th term, etc. He was totally focused on being a career politician. The way I see it both he and Brown are in it for the money and the voters are just window dressing.

He’s the only one who can lose to Shaheen.

If anyone can lose to Shaheen then it is to late to help your state, leave now while it is still permitted.

Actually, he switched to Independent while in the Senate for a brief period and then went back to GOP to get a chairmanship after John Chafee died. He lost renomination to John Sununu, Jr. in 2002.

Where he went truly nutty was when he endorsed John Kerry for President in 2004.

Thankfully I think he had zero chance in the primary.

I wish there was a better choice than Brown, but their ain’t. Better him than Shaheen.
