Pension chaos hits Chicago, Illinois budgets
Crain's Chicago Business ^ | July 04, 2014 | GregHinz.

yesterday's decision in a key Illinois Supreme Court case has set off a first-class explosion in state and local government, potentially punching tens of billions of dollars in holes in their collective budgets.

Some elements of the court's decision are drawing intense debate. But if the overnight consensus is anywhere near correct, everyone from City Hall and the Capitol to your local village and school board will have little option now but to dig deep, cut services and raise taxes a lot — and labor unions little incentive to compromise.

"The law in Illinois is now crystal clear: Politicians cannot break the promises made to Chicago teachers and other city employees," crowed the Chicago Teachers Union in a statement. "Recently passed laws to cut promised retirement benefits are clearly unconstitutional."

There were a lot of jews in Germany that felt the same way. I think some of them became lamp shades.

The teachers make up the union which along with the school boards have extorted the money from the taxpayers. So why not blame the teachers? Did these teachers believe they could just keep getting more and more from the taxpayer piñata?

The less educated teachers have my sympathy in the same way welfare dependent Social Security recipients have it. Many believe they should collect Social Security because it was promised to them by politicians. Now they have discovered politicians lie and they want taxpayers to make it good,

There is some guilt on the part of the employees but I agree that they’re the least guilty.

Nope, the conservative taxpayer is the least guilty. The liberal taxpayers voted for the politicians that put this in. The conservative taxpayer/voter is only guilty of being stupid enough to stick around for the bill.

The teachers voted in the union thugs, supported the union thugs, threatened strikes, and went on strike to get these contracts.

And then, they do a poor job of teaching, willing to try any new tricks that fail, but avoiding things like phonics that work.

They think they can negotiate with the unions to cut ANY benefit? Hahahahahahahahahahahaha!
Unions won’t just ride a horse into the ground, they’ll chop it up and eat it and then steal your horse.

Many of you need to grow up. Who would turn down a good job?

Unfortunately, the landlord will pass as much of the real estate tax increase on to the tenants in the form of higher rent, like any other expense. And if all the competing landlords get hit with higher taxes, they will perform in unison by raising the market rental rates.

Well duh, of course the taxpayer us least guilty but I was only talking about people who are guilty and not real interested in nit pick arguments.

Anyone union or non union who tells me that they demand less money for the good of the company or city, is a liar.

Then where are you going to live? Landlords won’t rent to you with a foreclosure on your record and you obviously cannot purchase another home for many years until your credit is built back up.

Blame teachers.
How do you think the Iron Triangle works?
The teachers elect the crooked pols who shovel money at the teachers.
Screw the parents. Screw the taxpayers. That’s how it works.

Did I say turn down a good job? I said we could blame the teachers. Take the job if you wish. But do not expect taxpayers to bailout your union/school board negotiated pension.

And please do act indignant when politicians spend all the money on other things. It is what they do... Lie and Spend and Buy votes. Not many people mind so long as the lies and spending work to their benefit.

I’ve said on FR for years that because California, Illinois, and NY State are crucial underpinnings of Democrat electoral votes, they will be the first to get federal guaranteed state bonds.
Let the debt multiply!

The people who sit in negotiation, look at the numbers, see them as unworkable, then make the deals anyway should be held criminally responsible. If the union members can’t accept a feasible deal then they can go on strike.

One advantage Detroit has is the fact that its legal for private industry to compete with municipal services in most cases. Its why the Detroit bus company is growing as the city bus service is shrinking. Its also the reason for the fight over water in Detroit. The water department is becoming increasingly privatized and they need to eliminate debt to attract more investors.

I live in Jackson county Michigan. In the city of Jackson they forced through a law that drove competing trash pick up services out of the city and imposed a tax to pay one service for all. Fortunately the people killed it within 6 months and went back to choosing their own pick up service from many.

I despise the teachers union but the average kid graduating college to be a teacher and working at it for 30 years is just looking for a job. This idea that teachers are an enemy is misguided. And frankly I don’t support taking away benefits that were promised to a worker all those years. If government could prioritize and budget these messes would not happen. Meaning, don’t offer a benefit if you don’t plan on funding it.

In my approach they still would get less, I just don’t blame the workers. Unions are evil.

pick out the parts that apply...

this is what i told a guy i know(county union worker) awhile back, he was not pleased… I Don’t Care.

When you extorted your unjustifiable contracts, you didn’t care about the Taxpayers that will be forced to pay for your salary and benefits that is more, and better, than theirs, no…

You said: Either give me what I want, or I will hurt you.
I will GO ON STRIKE and I WILL HURT YOU!!!

NOT, If you don’t give me what I want, I will quit, and get a different job… NO!

It was, GIVE ME WHAT I WANT OR I WILL HURT YOU!!!

You were told over, and over, and over again, through the years, and extorted contracts, that it was unsustainable.

But YOU didn’t listen, and YOU didn’t care.

And the local government said OK, because there was nothing they could do, And, knowing it would be somebody else’s problem down the road, well...

Well, guess what?

It’s down the road, and now… it’s YOUR problem!!!
The trough is empty, and the teat is dry.

Can you hear ME now???

You were all fat dumb and happy as long as your snout was in the PublicTrough up past your eyeballs,

but now…

Now… that the food level has dropped below Your eyes, even YOU can see the writing on the wall as well as the rest of us.

There WILL be reduced benefits to be sure, if not outright eliminations…

And guess what???

I, DON’T, CARE!!!

There is blame all around: taxpayers for electing and reelecting LIB/DIM/RINO pols, teachers for pressing their unions for more in their trough, pols themselves for giving it up to the unions, the unions for getting as much as they can. Screw’em. There is some enjoyment in watching them squirm.

People will never stop voting Democrat until they have to feel the results of having a Democrap government. This is a good ruling by the court.
