Remember the Alamo? Phil Collins sure does.
The British 1980s music icon was at the 1836 Battle of the Alamo and Texas Revolutionary shrine in downtown San Antonio on Thursday, announcing the donation of his collection of related artifacts — one so vast it's considered the world's largest such private collection.
Collins, the 63-year-old Genesis singer-drummer, joked he'd spent "all the money that I made from music" on 200-plus pieces related to the battle where 1,500 Mexican troops laid siege to 200 Texans. He said he wanted to ensure the collection was better cared-for in the future.
"Some people would buy Ferraris, some people would buy houses, I bought old bits of metal and old bits of paper," Collins said. "It's at my home, in my basement in Switzerland. I look at it every day, but no one else was enjoying it."
Collins has been an Alamo aficionado since growing up in London and watching actor Fess Parker portray Davy Crockett in a 1950s Disney miniseries.

Yes, but more important, “Remember San Jacinto”. (Mar 21, 1836) 18 minutes that formed a Republic and eventually the Great State of Texas.
When I was a kid we would be playing outside and at least one or two of the Mom’s would step out side and scream Davy Crockett’s on. It was game over and all of us kids would go to the closest house and all sit in the floor in front of the TV. Mrs. Tempeltons house was the best, we only had two channels and her antenna got the best reception, she also made fresh bread daily and would give us a big slice with butter and jelly and a glass of milk.

I know “The Musical Box” does a full on cover of The Lamb. I think Phil even sat in on one of their shows. Haven’t been able to see them yet.

The hook for them may have been that many an expat was down in the thick of it all.
I’ve never cared for Collins’ music. Bores me to tears.
But, he’s always seemed like a good guy and someone who would be fascinating and cool to hang out with.

One day after Grammy winning musician Phil Collins donated his collection of Alamo memorabilia to the state of Texas, a lawmaker said he will introduce a bill in the coming session to declare Collins to be an ‘honorary Texas.”
State Rep. Jason Villalba (R-Dallas) cited Collins ‘extraordinary generosity, both monetary and in spirit.’
“Phil Collins’ dedication to the study of the events that took place at the battle of the Alamo, as well as his devotion to the collection and preservation of important artifacts is truly remarkable,” Villalba said. “As Texans we should all be inspired by his passion for learning about this critical juncture in the Texas Revolution and his admiration for the individuals who gave their lives so that Texas could be free.”
Declaring a person to be an ‘honorary Texan’ is a rare honor, and Villalba invited Collins to come to the Capitol in January to receive the honor in person.
