The U.S. government has no contingency plan to deal with the massive sustained disruption of power that "could" occur as the result of a natural disaster or a terrorist attack delivered by, for example, ISIS, Iran, North Korea, etc, etc, etc.

Obama is busy dismantling our power grid everyday. From the war on coal and pushing useless renewables, to stymieing increases in base load capacity.

Of course they have no contingency plan. Both the rats and the repukes have zero interest in the future of America. Don’t believe me? Look at the debt clock. They’re here to make as much money as possible as quickly as possible, and screw the voters.

The lifespan of those utility pole transformers for each house is 50 years. The average age of the entire population of these transformers is 73 years old.

Worry about the easy stuff first, especially the crisis we create without anyone elses help.

Of course none of this work must have been “shovel ready”. That’s why the taxpayers spent over a trillion on something else whatever that something else was.

Part of it was probably for buying more EBT cards, Obama phones, votes, unemployment benefits, disability payments and funding the war on conservative Americans.

Its not a matter of if the grid is going down its a matter of when. Its either going to go down from overload problems after the EPA closes 292 power plants or one of these Iranian or Chinese hackers is going to get lucky one of these days. Or Blam is going to decide to go all in on guns and kick off CWII. The civilians will put the grid down just to screw up the govt jackboots. That’s just naming a few possibilities.

She missed the big one - the left wing using the EPA to shut down the coal plants.

Agreed. Lot's of threats to the power grid. And probably the greatest danger to it is due to the actions and/or inaction of "the ONE" who promised his easily scammed worshipful sycophants HOPE and CHANGE.

Yes, she certainly missed the most obvious one. But that's not nearly as exciting as a catastrophic failure due to terrorism.

But we really don't need to worry about that. DHS is on the job. The borders are secure. And the only enemies of America are conservative, Christian Tea Party grannies and granddads. And the IRS is taking care of them. </sarc>

The rising global Caliphate? Nothing to see here. Move along.

People like Lois Lerner could be given guns and training and sent to protect these places...

Lois Lerner with a gun? What could go wrong with that?

I’m not an expert on our power distribution system. I do believe if someone really wanted to, they could easily take out electrical substations with coordinated attack (the high voltage transformers) just outside the typical city with 50 cal rifles from a distance and effectively take out the power to a city for days if not much longer. Especially if the attacker(s) know the internal structure of the transformers and therefore where to hit it so it can’t be easily repaired.

Would it be that difficult to built a containment structure around these substations?

Just a visual barrier would do wonders I would think in terms of an attack from a distance.

It would force the attacker to break in the containment area and under those conditions it could be alarmed so law enforcement is triggered on entering. The thing is, most of these type facilities are not in populated areas and are unmanned. So breaking in and doing serious damage wouldn’t take long. But that is considerably better than being able to cause the damage from a distance without entry.

We live in an open society that was never planned for an enemy within. Our electrical infrastructure isn't the only thing open for attack. Water, gas, oil and communications all have critical infrastructure that is unprotected and out in the open.

There isn't much you can do to protect critical power lines and pipe lines that pass through vast open spaces. If someone went after the primary feeds to a particular city you could pretty easily take it out for an extended period of time. Most equipment/networks are planned based a single point failure that can be bypassed. Take out the backup and the primary and its going down.
