The U.S. should elect a woman as president "as soon as possible," first lady Michelle Obama said Monday at the first-ever White House Summit on Working Families.
"I think this country is ready," the first lady in response to a question from ABC's Robin Roberts about when a woman should be elected to the highest office in the country.
Obama didn't call out former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton by name, so it was no endorsement - and she also said that qualifications matter more than gender.

Why do we need a woman, and not just the person best qualified for the job?
Because Hillary wants to be our first woman president and no other reason at all. How many millions will vote as they are told by pulling the lever or punching the hole for Hillary simply because “It’s time”?
Doesn’t Hillary have any other qualifications to offer voters?
Are we really going to repeat the mistake of voting for a president on such a superficial basis as gender or skin color? Have we become so permanently stupid?
If Bill Clinton was the first black President then Obama is the first woman President.

Some women shouldn’t even vote. Like my former boss, who, during the run-up to the 2008 election, exclaimed to me with clear excitement, “wouldn’t it be great to have a black and a woman in the White House?”.

Obama was elected because people said it was “about time” we had a black President. Now, evidently, it’s “about time” for a woman. So where will this end? We haven’t had a gay President, a Latino President, a Native American President, a transgender President, an illegal alien President, a midget President, a quadriplegic President, and on and on. Will we have to go through every possible category? I’m thinking we’ll never have a white, straight male for President ever again.
