Viewpoints: Gun violence restraining orders could save lives

In the six years I’ve served in the Legislature, our nation has endured 31 mass shootings, five of which happened in California. As tragic as mass shootings are, they don’t account for the nearly 3,000 Californians who die every year from gunfire related to street and domestic violence, or suicides.

Following the tragedy at Sandy Hook, I had the opportunity to work with a wide-ranging group of academics, practitioners and advocates in the fields of mental health, public health and gun violence prevention. I was surprised by what I learned. First, I learned of leading public health data that attribute mental illness to only about 4 percent of the violence perpetrated against others. Second, the research shows individuals with mental illness are far more likely to be victims than perpetrators of violence.

Most importantly, I learned that the most important factors indicating that someone may be dangerous to themselves or others are signs of previous acts of violence, domestic violence, drug abuse and alcohol abuse.

re signs of previous acts of violence, domestic violence, drug abuse and alcohol abuse.

There's the liberals key, right there. With that, they get to define what exactly is "violence, domestic violence, drug abuse and alcohol abuse".

Do you own a gun and have you ever gotten into a fight? Violence.

Do you own a gun and have you ever argued with your wife? Domestic violence.

See a pattern here?

Typical Lying Lib - The FBI’s “Crime in the U.S. 2012” provides the following data in “Table 20, Murder by State, Type of Weapon:”

California – TOTAL murders – 1,879
TOTAL firearms – 1,304
Knives, cutting - 261
Other - 227
Hands, feet etc - 87

BTW - among the firearms used those Bad,Bad Ugly Rifles accounted for 38 while Shotgun Joe’s favorites ‘scored’ 52

Making the rounds:

Today I swung my front door wide open and placed my Remington 30.06 right in the doorway. I left 6 shells beside it, then left it alone and went about my business.

While I was gone, the mailman delivered my mail, the neighbor boy across the street mowed the yard, a girl walked her dog down the street, and quite a few cars stopped at the stop sign near the front of our house.

After about an hour, I checked on the gun. It was still sitting there, right where I had left it. It hadn’t moved itself outside. It certainly hadn’t killed anyone, even with the numerous opportunities it had been presented to do so.

In fact, it hadn’t even loaded itself. Well you can imagine my surprise, with all the media hype about how dangerous guns are and how they kill people.

Either the media is wrong or I’m in possession of the laziest gun in the world.

Well, I’m off to check on my spoons. I hear they’re making
people fat.

“Gun violence”, huh?

A recent FBI report stated that more people died from FISTS over the last few years than guns.

These people are deranged.

Good thing your rifle wasn’t stolen right off your doorstep!

Worse, what if a SWAT team sicced on you by your hostile liberal neighbor takes you down on a `domestic terrorism’ charge!!?

Never leave a firearm unattended! Unless you had someone out of view who was guarding it.

I was thinking the same thing...Did someone invent Kevlar impregnated paper???

Sure would make for some frustrating range sessions...

“I hit it!!!”

“No, you missed, no hole(s)!!!”

Hands and feet??? 87 deaths (homicides)???

Hmmmmmm, could this be related to any “knockout game” related attacks???

Our gun rights should be like our voting rights: you don’t need an ID, you don’t need to tell anyone where you live or what you do.

You just walk in and get what you want.

After all guns are a right.
Voting is a right.

And which of those activities does more damage to our system?

I think that you should be issued a gun if you obtain a restraining order against someone.
How about that?

The chick has always been somewhere between slow learner and just plain dumbass. The only thing new in that “research” is that the crowd realized it. And it is, and has been, always possible for a family to tighten up on a nut case’s gun rights, driving rights, out-in-public rights, and sometimes even reproductive rights/abilities. If you don’t believe me visit a State Hospital some time. In my view at least it has always been a family responsibility/obligation to ride herd on their own Loopies. It’s way preferable to leaving them for the rest of us to educate/re-train/discipline or sometimes take out.

in other words, if you are a liberal spoiled brat with a BmW you can kill people with, never wrong in the eyes of Johny Taleban retard parents , you do not get the restraining order... no. See, that would be racist, just as the Dartmouth students covered for another spoiled Bmer driver named Tsarnaev.

So check it out, police state denunciation atmosphere is what they want. Your loved ones are your number one enemies.

Using the force of the government’s guns to step on the throats of citizens can save lives. Only a liberal lunatic like Skinner can believe the verbal effluvium she regurgitates.

Simply the next increment in the never ending campaign to disarm citizens.

These people aren’t stupid. They know exactly what they are doing, and we’re allowing them to succeed.

Gun violence restraining orders could save lives

It might save a few. So what? It would undoubtedly COST lives as well. But it doesn't matter. It's not policy that any object or activity by which someone somewhere dies, must immediately be banned. Cars are still here. Pools are still here. Politicians are still here.

Has nothing to do with "safety".

It's nothing more than the ability to essentially convict someone of a "pre-crime". No due process, no jury, no 2A rights, and your guns get confiscated. Oh, yeah, and your reputation gets destroyed in the process. Great way for the statists to go after political enemies.

“She believe family and friends should be able to go to a Judge and remove another’s 2nd Amendment Rights.”

What about the potential victims rights to keep breathing and not get terminal lead poisoning?

A gun - be it revolver, semi auto, a much maligned black rifle or assault weapon, even the BFG from Doom - if you can handle them, go for it. They are tools, like anything else. Every person has the innate right (and desire) to self defense and that should not be infringed.

Let me use a much derided analogy for a second. Do you let a blind person, or an epileptic, or a habitual drunk drive? No - you do not. They cannot be trusted to deal with using the tool - in this case a car - well.

So how can you let someone with violent mood swings or a psychological disorder own a gun? That is the Leftist logic, among the rare rational Leftists. It’s appealing in a way - who wants to give the instant capability to kill to someone not of sound mind.

I say grab it and run with it. Turn the negative into a positive by forcing the Dems to put their backsides where their mouths are.

After centuries of real (not pseudo) scientific advancement we have left the solar system. Looked at 3 minutes after creation. Taken a peek at the smallest things possible, and the biggest. Yet how the mind works is still totally baffling. Our best guide to that were written 2500 years ago and just futzed with since.

The government pays for research. I have often said that if NASA had been permitted to take out patents, the USA would never have a deficit. Can you imagine the royalties on Velcro alone?

So make them pay for real research into what makes a man a man. Why one person is self reliant and will stand waist deep in crap with a shovel to feed his family, while the person next door lounges hopelessly, waiting for their hand outs. Or what if we could cure PTSD? Think of how many lives that would affect. At the moment we don’t even know for sure what causes it!

Might be slightly disjointed - been up for a fair while and winding down.
