The Most Liberal and Conservative Cities in Each State, Mapped
Policy,Mic ^ | 06/20/2014 | Tom McKay

The news: Business Insider compiled data by Clarity Campaign Labs and mapped the most conservative and most liberal cities in each state. Where do you fall on the list?

The methodology: These results are pulled from an online tool that allows people to find the city in their state that aligns with their political beliefs.

The results are pulled from Clarity's national models and SmartVAN Co-Op voter file, so they're pretty much as accurate as you're going to get and filtered right down to the zip code (having used similar tools before, I can tell you their system is capable of highlighting the specific addresses of everyone included). Their data set is composed of responses to the following seven statements. A "yes" answer on any of them except for religion indicated a liberal leaning:

- I identify with the Democrats more so than the Republicans.

- Abortion should be legal and accessible to all women.

- I attend religious services regularly.

- Climate change is an immediate concern that must be addressed.

- There should be more restrictions on purchasing and carrying guns.

- The government should reduce the deficit primarily by raising taxes rather than cutting services.

- I prefer urban areas.

The statements regarding religious services and rural/urban preferences were not included in this data set, presumably to make sure the results were based entirely off political beliefs. You can try Clarity Campaign's tool here; I managed to get a section of New York just a 10-minute walk from where I live, but your results may considerably vary.

A few surprises: that Greensboro is more liberal than Asheville or any of the Research triangles... that Huntsville is more liberal than Birmingham... That East Hartford is the most conservative city in Connecticut...

LOL. Augusta, New Jersey isn't even a "town" by most measures. It's a small hamlet in the northwestern corner of the state surrounded by a rural township that is populated by a combination of wealthy farmers and some NYC-based media folks (I think Lou Dobbs lives there and frequently commutes to NYC in a helicopter).

It's also the home to a minor league ballpark that has been in and out of insolvency over the years. It's a beautiful setting surrounded by woods and cornfields (it looks like something out of "Field of Dreams"), but the area isn't populated enough to support even an A-level minor league baseball team.

Who wasted their time putting this together?

A more trenchant question is: who will waste any time trying to distill any useful information from it?

Asheville is an odd city. Full of Communists and Satanists but also a lot of hard core Christians.

Graymont, Illinois; unincorporated; population under 300 - there might be some point to the study if they put a (sensible) lower limit to what they’d consider a “city”.

Osage WV, population app. 250, is most liberal.
Maysville WV, population app. 2280, is most conservative.

THESE AREN’T CITIES! THEY’RE BARELY VILLAGES!

If you have something better, post it; I'd like to see it. A more prescient question; why are you trying to make me look stupid for posting this?

Yep, unfortunately this is true. So what I will say right now is I would like to see people evoked to telling about the larger Christian conservative communities in their states, especially in Texas.

Turns out, I lived not too far from Graymont, Illinois in the late 70’s.

Never heard of it.

Asheville Mayor Leni Sitnick(??on spelling)in 1980s invited San Francisco to come to the NC city promoting the gay lifestyle, although she was married. Crime and drugs came in a much larger measure after her campaign.

The city fools wanted to make the area a tourist attraction only, so companies lost a lot of their tax breaks and welcome, at least twenty? closed their doors and went elsewhere based on local treatment. Jobs were gone except for the cheap paying ones, and other areas of the state still pay more than here for skilled or professional.

The Grove Park Inn was a sanitarium for tuberculosis patients early in the last century. Later it became a great hotel and golf course, after lots of changes and the Interstate coming here. Lots of immigrants (Philippines included) were brought here for summer jobs at the Inn.

The area was always popular with the elite due to the Biltmore House, and the Vanderbilts. The mountains have long been an escape for Floridians who summer here. Before 2008 it was popular for retirees to have a second home here...not so much anymore.

There has always been a strong Christian community, and yes some Satanists have decided to come too. However the area has always had a Bohemian feel downtown. This was a best kept secret to the very few until after WWII, then an influx came to disturb the quiet way of life. The outside rural areas were very conservative until the 1980s.

Natives are now outnumbered by those from left leaning places and cities like NYC, but there was a strong Democrat presence before that, it was so corrupt one had to almost sign up left to get a job, and then vote right.

Direct flights to NYC were in great demand for a long time.

Artists, Musicians, and Writers flourish here as the city is geared toward that group of people. The colleges invited this diversity and left leaning ideology. The campuses are obviously influencing the whole state.

Where I come from, church attendance isn’t a mark of conservatism.

East Orange NJ, liberal, urban, not safe to go into even in the daytime and run down.

Augusta NJ, conservative, rural, safe and beautiful.

Wow what a shock LOL.

It is sad; but I find it true only with ones that are liberal churches. This is why I state Christian conservative.

Ahh Hume, also known as Hume lake. Population of about 300, I lived there for 16 years and let me tell you it is heaven on earth. It is primarily a resort community that hosts conferences for church groups. Although their population is small, 40 to 50 thousand people come through that town each year and encounter genuine Christian hospitality. I would say that Hume has an impact that reaches across the globe. It is private property in the middle of federal Park and forest lands and the federal government has been trying to get their hands on it since 1946. With this new report I’m sure it will renew their efforts, but nothing will happen to this town unless God is done with it I assure you.

I remember Asheville as a very pleasant place back in the 60s. The last time I was there was in 1995 and it had changed a lot.

I worked at a Summer retreat and we would drive into Asheville, park behind the “All Sports Store”, and make our way down Patton Ave., finally ending up at Finkelsteins on Pack Square.

Regularly would watch the Tourists play at McCormick Field. If you bought a program, you had nearly a 50% chance of winning a door prize. Those were the days.
