McAuliffe says he won’t let government shut down (April 29th)

House and Senate Republican leaders opposed to Medicaid expansion urged resolution on the state budget impasse Monday. Gov. Terry McAuliffe stressed compromise and vowed that he would not let the government shut down.

Republicans accused Democrats favoring expansion of being “reckless and irresponsible” by being willing to extend negotiations beyond the end of the fiscal year in an attempt to get their way.

On Sunday, the Richmond Times-Dispatch reported that Senate Democrats were willing to hold out beyond the June 30 end of the fiscal year to make sure Marketplace Virginia was implemented as part of the budget.

But McAuliffe made clear Monday that he would not allow the commonwealth to go over a fiscal cliff.

“Our government will never shut down,” McAuliffe told reporters after the ceremonial signing of mental health legislation in Charlottesville.

“I have to do what I have to do as governor to make sure that our key resources are taken care of. Let’s use the next 60 days, let’s come together, put the partisan rhetoric aside.”

Jun 20, RTD:

Gov. Terry McAuliffe will play his hand today in a high-stakes poker game with the General Assembly over a proposed two-year budget that does nothing to help uninsured Virginians get health coverage.

McAuliffe has scheduled a late-morning news conference at the Patrick Henry Building in Richmond to announce whether he will sign the budget; veto it as a whole or by line item; or seek a new path for expanding health coverage with billions of dollars in federal funds under the Affordable Care Act.

A lot of politicians vying for Biden’s position...’foot in mouth’ is not a requirement for running for political office but some apparently think so.

He can’t shut the government down. If he doesn’t sign the budget, it goes into effect anyway. He can offer amendments, but those will be killed by the House of Delegates. Then the budget goes into effect.

With how much the wretched government charges me in Personal Property Tax, they should have plenty to run this miserable state.

Doesn’t the Senate have to pass vetoed amendments by 2/3rds vote? BTW - He did not veto the budget - just parts of it. Anything that benefited GOP districts (pork) he vetoed and cut off funds to remodel the (GOP) House in Richmond as well. He really went on personal attack ...

He vetoed a ban on Medicaid expansion and said he was just going to do it anyway.

“The governor said he is “moving forward” on health care expansion and has ordered Secretary of Health and Human Resources Bill Hazel to put a plan for expansion on his desk by Sept. 1.”

That’s a slap in the face that no one will forget.

Although I believe he actually did win the governor’s race, I am pretty sure he conspired to cheat to get his Attorney General in place!

He vetoed a ban on Medicaid expansion and said he was just going to do it anyway.

But he can't really do that. He can only strike the entire part from the budget (Medicaid as it exists), he can't strike a sentence from the Medicaid Expenditure. The courts have already ruled on this.

Heads up to everyone, Hillary is going to be McAuliffe on steroids ...

Attorney General 'won' by 250 votes, then we learned up to 40,000 people in VA also voted in MD with the same name. DemoRATs are shameless ...
