Dr. Oz: I Thought I Could Call Diet Drugs “Miracles” Because I Wasn’t Actually Selling Them
Consumerist ^ | June 19. 2014

Oprah’s favorite alternative medicine mouthpiece Dr. Oz got little love during Tuesday’s Senate subcommittee hearing on the misleading marketing of diet products, with the TV personality admitting that his use of terms like “miracle” for unproven treatments had provided fodder to scammers out to make a quick buck off people desperate to shed pounds. Last night, the Doc went on Facebook to give his fans his perspective on the issue.

“For years I felt that because I did not sell any products that I could be enthusiastic in my coverage,” wrote Doc Oz, who was chastised — most notably by Missouri Senator Clair McCaskill — for shows where he called certain weight-loss products “the number one miracle in a bottle” or “the magic weight-loss solution for every body type,” in spite of little to no peer-reviewed scientific evidence to back up such claims.

What is also shocking is that Dr. Oz is a Muslim =) I bet the Wookie feelings were hurt. No visit to the White Hut.

Dr Oz. He and Henry Waxman are proof that extraterrestrial aliens have visited us.

I know this isn’t saying much, but Dr. Oz is gentler and humbler than, say, Oprah Winfrey.

I think you’re right. Oprah - many years ago when she just started on national TV, I watched a bit. Once she got somewhat established, it was all over. It was like an animal let out of the zoo - all her real feelings about things and people came out.

Yes, in a round about way. I remember thinking at the time that he is not going to have a show after this. This was about a year ago.

Blowprah (platinum level member of the Chicago Mob) did more to elect Caliph Baraq than anybody except Axlegrease.

I read at least a couple of books that Dr. Oz authored/coauthored before he became “famous” and I found them informative and useful. And I didn’t know about the Oprah connection.

Anyway, I like Dr Oz and am probably what you’d call a fan. And I have watched his show and I do think that he makes “medical education” fun and accessible. And, yes, he does audience participation and it used to seem like lots of his audience were obese black women.

And, yeah, I think that Dr. Oz is an Obama fan but I still like him and appreciate what he does to inform us on taking better care of ourselves.

She sure did. I bet every one of her viewers, even the dead ones, voted twice for him.

Exactly!!

His book - You On A Diet did help me lose weight

He is a successful heart surgeon who appears to have gotten caught up in the fame game.

The people dragging him in and posing as champions for consumers are the same people destroying the country.

Maybe they should worry about a few other things first?

“The people dragging him in”

I heard that he went to them to see if there was something that could be done to get people to stop using his name in advertisements. Then they turned on him.

There’s gotta be a reason for that. He had displeased the powers-that-be in some fashion

Did you see the way McCaskill attacked him? He is a practicing heart surgeon (he still works at a hospital part time) and she is scum.

But, he’s dumb enough to call things that don’t work “miracles” because he isn’t “selling” anything.

She is scum, but he’s not clean either.

No. I was thoroughly disgusted with the brief clip of him sitting in front of these clowns.

I’m not saying he didn’t do anything wrong - but geeez!
This is the wrong bunch of people to point it out to him!

Now that’s over I can get back on my wagon and head to the next town to recommend my Dr. Phil snake oil that will loosen those cobwebs in your head, clear out your intestinal track and lose 20 pounds a week.

I graduated from the medical school at which he still is faculty. I met him. He is/was a very well-regarded cardiothoracic surgeon at a very top-flight hospital. Now he’s an incarnation of Glamour Magazine. You be the judge if that makes any sense.

“miracles”

did he say it’s been called a miracle or it “is” a miracle?

I have watched the shows and never found him to be over the top. He also debunks things.
