WASHINGTON (AP) -- The only American soldier held prisoner in Afghanistan has been freed and is back in U.S. custody after nearly five years of captivity, U.S. officials said Saturday.

The officials said the Taliban agreed to turn over Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl in exchange for the release of five Afghan detainees from the U.S. prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. The transfers happened after a week of intense negotiations mediated by

We trade FIVE terrorists in Gitmo for one US soldier...after five years. What a group we have in charge.

Sounds like a plan to me. Now, lets exchange some Mexicans in our prisons for the one Marine in Mexico. How about 500,000 for starters.

The case of Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl, held by the Taliban since 2009, has arisen again as the U.S. and other countries engage in diplomatic efforts to free him.

But if he is released, will America’s only prisoner of the Afghan war be viewed as a hero or a deserter?

While tattered yellow ribbons still adorn utility poles in his native Hailey, Idaho, others are expressing conflicting thoughts about Bergdahl’s plight as the war winds down, with President Barack Obama threatening to withdraw all U.S. troops by year’s end unless the Afghan government signs a crucial security agreement.

They are convinced that on June 30, 2009, just a few months after he arrived in Afghanistan, Bergdahl willingly walked away from his unit, which was deployed in Paktika province in eastern Afghanistan, adjacent to the border with Pakistan. While they do want Bergdahl home, they think he should have to answer allegations that he deserted his unit.

Reminds me of Damian Lewis’s character, Nick Brody, in Homeland.

You don’t suppose this soldier was “turned,” do you?

A week of intense mediation. Well, at least the VA scandal produced some results. No doubt this was done as a political act to help change Obama’s “anti-veteran” image. So when will be the WH photo op?

That's about how long they've been in charge in DC, since they were assigned parking spaces and learned where the supply closets are.

President Obama personally telephoned the soldier’s parents on Saturday, shortly after Sergeant Bergdahl was transferred to the American military; the Bergdahl family was in Washington after a visit here for Memorial Day, officials said.

“Sergeant Bergdahl’s recovery is a reminder of America’s unwavering commitment to leave no man or woman in uniform behind on the battlefield,” President Obama said in a statement.

It looks like the Taliban have a plan. Now they need another US hostage to get some more of their brethern released from Gitmo.

Yep. Now every terrorist group in the world knows all they have to do is grab some Americans and they can get what they want.

We can expect a slew of kidnappings shortly.

As far as America's enemies are concerned, Obama is the gift that keeps on giving.
