Marco Rubio: Open Congress' retirement plan to all workers

WASHINGTON (AP) — Younger workers would face higher retirement ages and wealthier Americans would see their Social Security paychecks trail their less affluent neighbors under a plan proposed Tuesday by Sen. Marco Rubio.

Rubio, a first-term Republican senator from Florida who is outlining a policy agenda as he weighs a presidential bid, also proposed allowing all Americans to join federal retirement accounts. He vowed to protect benefits for older Americans but he added that changes were needed if the system is to survive.

"The Social Security trust fund is drying up," Rubio said, referring to money collected to pay certain benefits.

He said the safety net for retirees will run into debt in 2033 if changes are not made. "This is not a scare tactic. ... It is a mathematical certainty if things remain unchanged."

Democrats said the Rubio proposal is one similar to Republican Mitt Romney proposed when he unsuccessfully ran for president in 2012.

"Sen. Rubio's plan is just the latest example of the Republican Party's out-of-touch policies that benefit a few instead of extending opportunity for all," Democratic National Committee spokesman Michael Czin said.

Rubio’s thinking small—Open up all of the benefits Congress enjoys to all US citizens.

They work for us, after all.

Wall Street wouldn’t be the same if the general populace could trade on inside information just like Congress critters...

"Social Security was never designed to be the sole source of retirement income," he said.

This is true, but times have certainly changed in the last 10 or so years as the US moves to a part-timer employment force. The chances of young people working 30 years for the same company nowadays are pretty slim, unless one is in gubment work.

Open up all of the benefits Congress enjoys to all US citizens.

Does that include their stock tips for insider trading? Even CNBC admitted that Cong. critters make "market crushing" returns.

A gimmick, big whoop.

Maybe not, compared to MYRA, lets look at this...

The TSP ( Thrift Savings Plan ) had something like 7 investment options when I was exposed to it. Low cost provider ( Barclay's I believe behind the scenes ) with the boring almost Vanguard approach, index, growth and bond funds. You could build a boring steady as she goes portfolio and it would be ho-hum and grow.

Now for all the cheap SOB's that won't offer 401k's to their employers ( I've seen them, and I have seen the corollary that found low cost options and did right by their employees), or are offering expensive ones, this option would be a no brainer. Even more so the low-information voter that has no idea about the investment world could be brought into it and maybe just maybe at some-point take an active roll and learn about it and empower themselves and got just go along and expect the worst.

With on caveat, that they must pick their own funds and or get professional advice, not what WJC wanted to do and go with pre-determined options and Greenspan told him no since he thought it wouldn't pass legal muster, but then again post Justice Roberts, all bets are off...

Can someone help me please?

I’m trying to find the words “retirement,” “Social Security,” and “benefits” in the Constitution.

Oh, yeah. And “education,” “health care,” and “health savings accounts,” too.

I know they must be there, or Republicans wouldn’t keep proposing ideas for the federal government to run them, would they?

“The Congress shall have Power To lay and collect Taxes, Duties, Imposts and Excises, to pay the Debts and provide for the common Defence and GENERAL WELFARE of the United States”

One more thing. All the Uber-Loons Wasserman Shultz, Durbin, etc etc etc are gonna have a hard time lambasting this given they all contribute as does all their staff ( I bet it is 100% participation ) to this plan.

You mean it's good for us and not for you? Like your Congressional healthcare vs. Obamacare?

They can't continue to play hypocrite much longer, someday the sheeple must wake up...

The Social Security trust fund

There's no such thing.

Just cash coming from other people. And it was spent anyway a long time ago.

Nuthin' but borrowing to pay off IOU's coming due.

Great idea Rube, and give us all the same medical care as Obama gets too.

That will work.

Marco Rubio: Open Congress' retirement plan to all workers

Better yet, force Congress into the same retirement and health plans they are forcing on us.
