US states may go back to electric chair and firing squads

Shortage of drugs for lethal injections leads states to consider alternative methods of executing prisoners

By Raf Sanchez, Washington

6:42PM BST 01 May 2014

US states may revert to killing their death row inmates with electric chairs, firing squads and gas chambers as it becomes increasingly difficult to source chemicals for lethal injections.

The EU has banned the export of one of the most common sedatives used in lethal injections, forcing US states to experiment with new "cocktails" of drugs for executions.

One such experimental recipe was used in the botched execution of an Oklahoma prisoner on Tuesday, leaving him to writhe in pain and die of a massive heart attack 43 minutes after being injected.

The shortage of execution drugs, coupled with fears the courts may intervene to ban experimental methods of lethal injection, have prompted states to look at alternative ways to kill prisoners.

Tennessee's legislature has passed a bill that would reintroduce the electric chair if the state was unable to find drugs for lethal injections.

The state's Republican governor is still weighing whether to sign it into law.

Missouri is considering a proposal to reintroduce both firing squads and gas chambers if it becomes impossible to carry out a lethal injection.

Richard Dieter, executive director of the Death Penalty Information Centre, said the laws were intended as symbols by conservative politicians of their commitment to the death penalty.

"It's about being even more blatant than the anti-death penalty side. To see this as a rational process is to miss the harshly divisive political atmosphere that produces these things," he said.

I guess one right way would be to return to the Biblical solution, stoning.

Really? Then let the words of the Word of God Himself, Jesus, be to those who want to do so: "Let the one without sin throw the first stone."

His words to the guilty are also, "I don't condemn you, because of which you may sin no more."

Well, a supersonic bullet will DEFINITELY result in a heart attack. :)

Hanging has proven effective for millenia and I don't think we'd have a problem finding rope.

Actually, i think the Biblical method of stoning is best.

1. It works to foster more moral certitude of those doing the stoning. It i one think to allow the state to do the dirty work, but like welfare, it fosters ambivalence, whereas if you do the stoning, you want to make sure the one being stoned is guilty.

2. It provides a deeper sense of justice for Boston Marathon fans to stone Tsarnaev (not that many would, unlike Bruin fans) than the state to do so.

3. It forces the criminal to see the corporate nature of his/her crime.

He would have taken a LOT longer to die if I was running the show...

But you aren't. And frankly, someone else has to do it. I think embroiling the medical profession in this is totally wrong. Bring back firing squads, drawn by lot from the jury pool.

Doesn't the buildup of CO2 cause the panic response? Indeed, makes it feel like you cant quite breath deep enough, but it shouldn't last long. Pop them a few Xanax before hand... CO is even better, that sucker sneaks up and you.

And just for the record, in general, I oppose capital punishment, although I don't really mind when a bad guy dies.

a variation of an eye for an eye

Which Jesus repudiated by confronting those that wanted to stone the woman caught in the CP crime of adultery and annihilated by taking the condemnation and judgment for all the sins of the world on the cross.

-and my family members are not socialists-Fabian or otherwise

I'm sure they are not and don't mean to imply they are. But it's the same basic thinking in that area.

A syringe of this will kill a horse in SIX SECONDS! Often used by vets for that purpose.

So?

i agree that lethal injection is not the way to go with executions but please do not ask me to cry over this guy.

Ding, ding, ding! We have a winner.
I do not care one whit about a deterrent effect. I care about stopping those who kill in cold blood from killing again. I have lost numerous friends to murderers and fully support a swift death penalty in air tight cases and life with NO CHANCE of parole in all other cases.

Turning them over to the victim’s family would probably be the fairest and best choice, and was practiced in a number of societies in ancient times-and a form of it still is by some of Latino ancestry-we call it venganza. But I can already imagine the hue and cry if that were to become law...

What an odd thing to say to a reasoned post on a discussion forum. Or are we to become like the Left, and not allow intelligent and reasoned discussion? Or do you just like your 10-Minute Hate (Orwell, 1984) to be uninterrupted once you abandon reason on a topic?

Punishment should match the crime and mandatory for all over age of sixteen to watch televised as possible deterrent. Also program for all drunk or stoned drivers must complete community service assisting coroners/funeral director embalming and prepping bodies after their jail term of course. I have something special for late term abortionists, drawing and quartering of perps televised. If one lives by pulling others to pieces then one should die by being pulled to pieces. Well I better stop, can’t say here what punishment should be for sodomite pedo’s. And don’t tell me people wouldn’t watch with all the horror, porn and slime film out there. At least real thing would be honest.

Forgiveness is a private matter. The state exists to do justice on our behalf, and part of that is vengeance. You can forgive murderers all you like on your own behalf, but not on mine.

The “punishment” of the death penalty for the acts of everyone were totally paid for, punished, and condemned on the cross of Christ 2000 years ago.

I am a believer that Christ died for my sins and for the sins of each and every one of us. That said, your statement is a false argument. Christ died because we were not capable of achieving righteousness with God on our own. We are not capable of earning salvation, it is a gift. He did not die to allow us to evade punishment for acts against others on earth.

The legitimate purpose of dealing with dangerous criminals is incarceration to protect society from danger.

And the fact that hundreds of people are killed by those previously incarcerated, including by those sentenced to life in prison, demonstrates that method is insufficient to protect society from that danger.

The death penalty serves justice because it's an "eye for an eye."

The bible clearly calls for punishment for death in situations other than murder. The biblical argument is more than an eye for an eye, but for not allowing those who are truely evil to live. It is a protection of the society, not just a punishment.

Victims and their family are not justly served and have no closure.

That may be, but it is not the reason for our death penalties.

You lock up dangerous criminals to protect society.

Perhaps you should read from this list.

http://www.prodeathpenalty.com/repeat_murder.htm

prisoners should be productive and at least pay their way in prison

While this can work for lower level offense, it is clear from our past history that this greatly opens up the chances for escape.

Should the bar for conviction be raised higher than it is now - yes.

Does more harm than good? Pray tell me sir, what dissuades immoral people from committing crimes? I grew up with criminals for relatives btw - including my father.

I curious as to what you believe.
