Back in the old days, before the rules were changed, seniority in congress allowed Southern states like South Carolina to wield some power against the larger northern states. Once a pol got in office, he was pretty much guaranteed reelection, often unopposed. That is why Strom Thurmond was reelected until he dropped dead at age 99. The rules have changed, but I suspect that old habits die hard and Linda Graham is reaping the benefits.
