MILFORD, Ohio - An 89-year-old southwest Ohio woman is preparing to move out of her home of the last 10 years because it has gone smoke-free.
The Cincinnati Enquirer reports that Beulah "Billie" Toombs faces eviction after being deemed non-compliant by her apartment building's management. A smoker for seven decades or so, she thinks she should be allowed to do what she wants in her own home.
But more than a year ago, the management of the apartments for low-income seniors announced a smoke-free policy. Residents already there were allowed one year of smoking with some conditions. When the smoke-free policy kicked in this year, neighbors reported Toombs' smoking, and a regular apartment inspection this month found cigarette butts and ashtrays in her unit.
So Toombs is looking for a new home.
Why is it poor people get tax funded rent subsidies when they can afford to buy smokes?
Doesn’t she realize that smoking will shorten her life?

The fact is, poor people sucking on the government teat are also sucking on cigarettes. Clearly they have disposable income to spend on cigarettes....the rhetorical question is why aren’t they putting those dollars to use on housing?

An old man once told me “If someone gives you money they’re going to tell you how to spend it.” In this case, they’re telling her “Take our rent subsidies and live under our rules.” That’s just the way it is.
It's not her home. It belongs to someone else and she entered into a legal agreement to lease space from them. If she can't abide by the agreement then she should find somewhere else.

That he is fine with the government micromanaging how one spends their money.
If not smokes, then maybe mandated vitamins, or fruits and veggies, no meat, no sugar, no cigs, no beer.

The government gets 2/3rd of the price right back in taxes.
Please, half the dealers in the country live in public housing or get subsidies to help with their rent. No one would dare throw them or their customers out because an inspector verified that the hair of the occupants constantly reeks of pot.
The Fedz run a campaign to demonize a group and even people who should know better hop on the bandwagon. It's all a matter of which people it's popular to vilify at the moment and this lady is among those the government says it's Ok to tar and feather.
